Does anybody know much about satellite radio for car-
so that BBC radio etc can be picked up in the far south, Cork.?
TV could be watched of course by passengers.
With BBC radio possibly switching off am and lw it will be more urgent in the next few years if folks in the south and west want to listen to bbc when driving

Satellite Radio for cars is not available in Ireland or even Europe for that matter. In the US they have Sirius and XM radio (now merged I think). It uses satellites with a different orbit (usually pointing straight down) for best reception and also networks of repeaters as even this can get blocked sometimes. Satellite Radio as we know it on Sky etc. is totally incompatible with cars as move the dish quarter of an inch and you lose signal, imagine trying to pick that up barrelling down the motorway at 80MPH!

There is a Portuguese company planning to launch a pan european sat radio product in 2011 or 2012 but wheter it will get off the ground it unknown, also having Irish or English stations would not be guaranteed.

DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale) would be the best technology to be implemented overall replacing both sat, FM and DAB as it takes the reception range of AM, MW & SW and adds in Digital binary (the reception stream in MP4 format) making for high quality digital radio with long distance reception meaning no breakup associated with digital streams.
