People who smoke 20 a day are stupid.

People who smoke one or two every now and again when out are even stupider. Like, wtf is the point?

when you comes out of your mothers womb the first place you draw comfort and sustenance is sucking on your mothers teats.as a baby practicaly all life and happiness is contained in this act and this is heavily imprinted on the human mind.
even though everyone knows that smoking is very bad for you, hundreds millions of people, worldwide, continue to draw comfort from sucking on cigarettes. (the same could be said for sucking alcohol from straws, biting your nails, chewing on a pencil end etc etc)

So you don't want us to shed a negative light on smoking? What exactly do you want to hear? That smoking is great for your health, and it makes no difference to your finances whatsoever?

I actually think less of a social smoker, whats the point?!

I've tried to stop smoking but it's like I'm addicted or something.

Being someone who's tried all kinds of drugs I hate my tobacco addiction I get nothing from it. It's purely an addiction and nothing more.

at the bus stop the other day and 3 of us on the bench, me out the right, woman in middle and a gentle man reading a book on the left.

typically the old cranky woman in the middle whips out a smoke and dosent have the decency to move to behind the side of the bus stop where there is glass so others dont get smoke in their face but nooooo she wouldnt budge (miserable bitch), myself and the other dude that was reading had to get up and walk away from her and long and behold there were others smoking !!!:mad::mad:

I smoke. Why did I start? It was "cool."
Why do I continue to smoke? I'm addicted and I enjoy it.

After 6 years of not smokinhg and spluttering at the mere thought, I bought some slim menthols. A couple of months ago. And some more since. I think they are neat. And I enjoy the ritual and the having something to do, and the fun of hiding from the anti smoking nazis and the nice nicotene buzz. And it makes standing around waiting for things easier. And above all else, it's cool.

I quit smoking for a year, and got drunk the night before my A Level results came out and decided to have just one cig to calm my nerves. I was straight back on the full 10 cigs a day.

I've come to think of smoking as something that teenage girls do, just because most smokers I see are females aged around 16.

Now I always subsconsciously think of smokers as immature and effeminate. :pac:

I think it's disgusting : ( couldn't even imagine doing it,i hate it when i even walk past someone who's smoking.

Then you'd really hate my college. There's small open area that connects the college to the canteen and all the smokers seem to congegate in this small area, despite the fact that there's a perfectly good smoking area at the back of the canteen. So you have to walk through the pollution of smoke in order to have your lunch in the canteen.

So now we're going to have a bash the smokers thread rather than why do people smoke?

I smoke when I drink and I enjoy it. I only smoke in designated smoking areas, I pay tax on every box of cigarettes I buy and this goes into the governments coffers.

I smoke because I like nicotine and have dated anti-smokers that never knew I smoked.

It's my health, I can do with it as I choose, my own health insurance will cover me incase of illness, I will not be a burden on the state.

I seriously doubt that- the smell of cigarettes on clothes and hair is just stomach churning and kissing a smoker is really awful.

I smoke because I know no other way. When I was 4 years old my mother made me smoke. She said I couldn't "enjoy" a can of beer without a smoke and called me a ******

    I'm being 100% honest.

I don't smoke that often but I'd rather kiss a smoker than someone with bad breath or BO.

    It's a pointless waste of money, I'm glad I don't do it.

I am sure you do a lot of things that are a "pointless waste of money", each to their own.

Smoke if you want to, I enjoy it sometimes, other times I don't enjoy it. I may smoke 10 today and nothing for a week. Why? Because I fcuking want to, and I fcuking like it, that's why...

I wouldn't like to kiss anyone with any of those things- maybe yr partners were being nice and not saying anything though- as a non smoker anyone coming near me who smokes really isn't pleasant for me at all. Or if you rarely smoke, then maybe they were putting it down to- ah sure he/she was at the pub/with a smoker pal, someone was probably smoking on top of him. Most people come back from the pub or club stinking anyway.

It's the first smoke in the morning with the cup of tea. The random moment of sanity in a crazy day where you don't even have time for lunch. It's the constant friend that you return to when nobody else is around. It's that first pull upon sitting down after a long assed day. Or the satisfied smoke after an excellent meal. It's the easiest drug in the world to get into and one of the hardest to kick. It's a horrible drug and I recommend nobody ever do it. I've smoked since I was 14.
That said it's a great conversation starter of a lonely saturday at the pub.

I smoke when I'm out. I like the nicotine buzz, especially when alcohol is mixed in. It's my decision, i don't feel guilty about it, that said, my mammy doesn't know

Just as a side note, my grandmother had tb in her 20s and had pretty mech half of each lung removed. She also had asthma. She smoked a lot, I dunno exactly how much, maybe 10-20 a day, yet she lived to 81. Cigarettes didn't kill her, arthritis did. It's funny the way that worked out...

The worst? Bit of an overstatement. Worse than murderers? Worse than rapists? **** that. The law says smokers cannot smoke in an enclosed workplace, so you've gotten us outdoors (which i agree with tbh) But, it pisses me off when some aul biddy givin me a dirty look for smoking outdoors.

"If alcohol is queen, then tobacco is her consort. It's a fond companion for all occasions, a loyal friend through fair weather and foul. People smoke to celebrate a happy moment, or to hide a bitter regret. Whether you're alone or with friends, it's a joy for all the senses. What lovelier sight is there than that double row of white cigarettes, lined up like soldiers on parade and wrapped in silver paper? I love to touch the pack in my pocket, open it, savor the feel of the cigarette between my fingers, the paper on my lips, the taste of tobacco on my tongue. I love to watch the flame spurt up, love to watch it come closer and closer, filling me with its warmth." -Luis Bunuel

Pfft, I don't even smoke myself but I don't see your problem tbh. Bus stops are outdoors and most smokers aren't so much "Blowing smoke AT everyone" as exhaling....

How it starts: Usually in the teens. Lads trying to impress women or their friends, probably both. About age 13/14. Seriously, you must never have been a teen not to know this.
Some try to give it up after a year when they realise how stupid they've been, but they give in every now and then, and like a snowball getting bigger as it rolls they eventually are fully addicted.

How it ends: A slowish death. Decreased breathing capacity, coughing/spluttering until eventually one gets lung cancer/heart disease/another smoking-related disease.
Either that, or one gets so unhealthy in their late 30's/early 40's and decides to give them up, either fails or succeeds.

I don't smoke and mostly I don't mind smokers. A load of my friends are smokers. You only smell like ****e after a cigarette if you hold it close/downwind to your cloths so they get the full whack of smoke for a while. That's a horrible smell btw, like wet dog.
What I do mind is inconsiderate arsehole second-hand smokers that smoke in the house, in public, crowded areas, or in enclosed spaces like a car. Bastards. I don't smoke, but I think I get atleast a fag a day with the second-handers.

If you've gotten through your early teens and never smoked then smoking is a mystery that's probably not particularly interesting and you probably think there are better things to be doing with your time and health.

If, likeme you did fall into the trap then whilst smoking you think they are: Initially fun/rebellious but eventually it leads to.... I dunno.... a mental crutch. I'm in an uncomfortable social situation? I'll just nip out for a fag. I'm bored? I'll just nip out for a fag and so on and so forth.

Now, as an ex smoker for I dunno.... 2 years or so I suppose I hate cigarettes with a vengence. I alway used to roll my eyes at born again non smokers but it's not till you throw the smokes away that you truely realise what ****ty things they are from so many perspectives. They slowly kill you, they drain your finances, they act as that forementioned mental crutch. They make you SMELL SO ****ING BAD!!!!!!!!!! (I mean fuuuuuuuuck I never really appreciated just how foul a smoker smells when he/she is just back from a smoke).

One thing since giving up that drives me utterly mad is when one of my smoking friends tries to give up and every last one of the smokers will go out of their way to offer a cigarette to the person. I used to do it myself and I think back now and wonder why, if I have a friend, would I be so intent on trying to keep them hooked on such a nasty ****ty thing and yet I did it and see monthly other smokers doing the same thing to people they call friends.

Anyway, my uncle is currently dying of lung cancer after smoking most his (now shortened) life. He's now in a wheel chair and has the prospect of a ****ty ****ing end. **** SMOKING!! It's a ****ty,horrible ****ing addiction and I thank my lucky stars that I fought through those crappy weeks to get off them.

If you watch a lot of movies, you get the romantic idea of smoking. It's cool, it creates character and charisma, so you do it in social situations because it helps you feel more comfortable in uncomfortable situations. Especially when you're drunk or on your way to being drunk.

Unfortunately smoking only leads to character and charisma in films, and smoking in real life is viewed as unattractive by most people. It's all an illusion.

Smoking completely disgusts me. I posted this earlier in the Phobias forum but it's relevant here too:

I have what I'd say is a phobia of smoking and anything to do with it. I'm not alone, my siblings are all the same. I feel disgusted by the word "cigarette" - I avoid saying it if at all possible and if I have to then I feel disgusted by it. I won't even touch a pack of them and will feel physically sick if one (and/or an ashtray) is even within my vicinity. I've often felt myself gagging if I inhale too much smoke.
