    Hi all,

I've been playing guitar for about 6/7 years and I'm interested in starting to play traditional music. I can beat out the ballads til the sun comes up but now want to start playing with traditional bands jigs/reels etc.

Anyone got any idea where I'd start off? Is there sheet music available or is it possible to judge off tin whistle sheet music etc.

    Any help wud be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Melody or backing? I'd imagine backing would be easy for you, theres some tips on this site http://www.tradlessons.com/?cat=17

For melody I'd imagine you can just use any sheet music. Sorry I don't play guitar so that's about as much as I know, I'm sure someone else will come along with advice. You should be able to find stuff on youtube like this for eg. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7VgtbZsWZE&feature=related

Check out Arty McGlynn or Steve Cooney, try and play along with any CD's with them on it you may find. And start looking for some regular session buddies!

Find out about modal scales, basically a lot of Irish tunes use a slightly different scale to what you'd be used to in Ballads and the like. The chords don't really go to where you'd expect them to. And start working on chord inversions up the neck from where you may be using already, maybe using a few open drone strings along the way. Also start learning a few songs the DADGAD tuning on the guitar.

I'm not a great reader so I usuallly play by ear. It's not really all that hard to get the hang of, you just got to start learning the tunes really.

2 great sites for guitar players new to trad music:

Great place to learn DADGAD theory and chords:

Good sets of tunes to play along to for when you cant find sessions, most of the tunes there are pretty well known and there is alot of variety (reels, jigs, hornpipes):

    Good luck :)
