Gas Fire / Real Fire Copper Pipe

Hi Folks Ok I am in a semi d built about 10 years ago. Fireplace has a small I assume gas copper pipe. Pictures attached. The actual brick at the back says WARNING FIRST FIRE SHOULD BE SMALL AND GRADUAL AND ALWAYS USE FIREGUARD AND SUPERVISE and under this it reads 16DM
When looking up the chimney it seems to be made of an orange clay mould material not plastic not metal also seems to be slightly angled just above fireplace
Question 1: The pipe is blocked and pinched at the end. Will lighting a fire in this melt this copper pipe and make it unuseable for connecting to gas fire at later date? (of course ill be using a fire grate which will raise it over the pipe)
Question 2: To get a gas fire installed roughly am i looking at mad money? Fireplace and surrounds already there I just need the actual coal insert fire (already have natural gas mains piped)

I want to put a gas fire in there before xmas money permitting but would be content with a real fire if it was possible untill i have the funds for gas fire if its mad money to have one inserted and fitted!
Any help at al would be greatly appreciated guys and gals!

    Bertie

If that pipe is live and you light a fire you could end up with a car park where you house is:eek: even if it's not live and you melt the solder you will have a open point which is never a good thing.

You could get a RGII gas installer to inspect the fire place/flue for you and advise you on your options for fires, you should at least get him to cap that gas supply safely, the isolation valve for a gas fire should be outside of the fire place and it would be advisable do it and renew the fire supply in a safe manor and not just pinched:mad: which no proper gas fitter would ever dream of leaving behind them. If you don't go for the gas fire i would still have the chimney swept and checked before you use it, paranoia is a good thing, Gary.
