A couple of questions regarding contacts

    Hey,
I have never worn contact lenses before, but I want to try them out instead of glasses.

I went for an eye test today and got my prescription. The optician advised that I get glasses, but I don't want to spend the money on a pair of glasses now and I've seen the links for cheap contact lenses here, so that should do me fine.

The optician said that a 'fitting' for contact lenses would cost €31. Now, maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, but surely it's not that hard to put in contact lenses? And even if I find it tricky, I could get someone who wears them to show me how to do it.

Am I right in thinking that it's grand just to get the prescription and put in an order online?

There are lots of different types of contact lenses, far more than just monthly/ daily disposables. It's important to get contacts that suit your eyes and that fit properly. It depends on the shape of your eyes etc. Wearing the wrong contacts can have unwanted consequences such as dry eye, discomfort etc. I'd strongly advise going for a fitting. Once you get ones that suit, then absolutely order them online to get a bargain.

Contacts are an amazing invention. Nothing beats them...well, except maybe laser surgery!

Yeah you'll certainly need a fitting session to get the correct sizing for the contacts, it doesnt take long at all and once you get it done you're all set:) The sitting also lets you judge whether you can actually use contacts, and more than likely you can get a trial session to see how your eyes react to them as not everyone can wear them:(

Make sure to get a copy of your prescription from the opticians as you'll need this to order online, i've yet to order any myself online but aim to save some cash really soon by doing just that:D Good luck with the contacts, they are such a great thing!!

I agree about the fitting - its definately worth it.
Also, even with contacts you should really have glasses too. Its not good for your eyes to wear contacts all the time and you may even find that you can't wear them all the time.

Contact lenses are classed as medical devices. It is a legal requirement that an optometrist or appropiate medical professional fits your lenses and gives you regular aftercare. If any shop or website supplies contact lenses to you without you having a contact lens fit they are breaking the law.

This true I'm afraid. They cant give you contacts without a contact lens prescription which is a different prescription to your glasses prescription. In order to get a contact lens prescription you will need to be fitted with contact lenses! There is no way out of it really. It may look easy but its a little more difficult than you think.
