Would the car be a bmw by any chance. Same thing happen to another guy on here recently. Here's what he done, maybe it will work for your husband too. Linky. It's an expensive job to check the tank flushed out. I know someone who was charged €300 for the privilege.

It's a Mondeo. OP, have you driven the car at all or even started it since you filled it with petrol? It's a commonrail diesel, so it won't take well to a diesel/petrol mix, so it needs to be siphoned or just drained. Hopefully someone has a better idea.

Not sure about the mondeos ...but you maybe able to break into the feed/return pipes coming from the tank that are connected into fuel filter and connect on a small 12 volt pump to syphon out most of the petrol from the tank or the other option is remove the fuel gauge/suction assy under the
    rear seat.
under the seat there should be a large 6" round cap covering a plastic nut that will need to be removed...these nuts can be a fecker to remove...

    it's something like this.. http://autorepair.about.com/library/a/1i/bl740i.htm
As you see in the link theres a special tool to remove this nut,
also be careful of the seal in there as you don't want diesel leaking out
    there afterwards...
It also maybe a good idea to replace the diesel filter if the car had run with petrol in it.
    Best of luck....:)
