A rare bargain in Harvey Norman's?

HN - in Little Island, Cork at least - are selling their remaining display stock of Sony P Series netbooks at €499 - quite the bargain when you consider the marked price is €1099. To sweeten the deal further, Sony are currently offering €160 cashback on P Series sold before the end of Nov, dropping the price to €339 (claim form link). I picked up a green one today and they had ONE left in white. Salesman refused to budge on price, but threw in a two year extended warranty for free - allegedly worth €69. White one seemed rather grubby but I'd imagine it'd clean up fine. Note it (and mine) is missing the pointer button (no trackpad on these) - HN have replacements ordered.

P series have a high spec (link) - 1600x768 screen, 2 gb RAM, 3G, Bluetooth........and the slowest Atom processor together with Vista Home Premium. Hmmm - we'll see how that one works out.

Salesman reckons these aren't eligible for the Windows 7 upgrade but I think they might. Just registered it anyway so we'll see what they say.

Emmm......anyone wanna buy a Dell Mini 12 less than two months old?!

Dunno if I could bring myself to even touching on of these. Ming.

You also have to factor in that these things have probably been powered on for 16 hours a day for the last 6 months...

Pretty poor specs tbh. Not really a good bargain.

    Windows 7 comes on a cd. :D

    netbooks don't have a cd drive. :(

you would need to create a bootable USB & transfer Windows 7 across & boot from the USB.

    Good luck ;););)

Windows 7 makes things easy. It's as simple as copying across the files from the cd to the usb stick and it'll boot.

    Thanks for the lesson.

Now I must go back to my netbook running W7...

You sure about that?! Processor may be slow (although not that much slower than most) but the rest of the spec is higher than 95% of netbooks out there. Not too many netbooks with 2GB, HD ready screen and 3G connectivity.... And it's over two thirds off retail price..... You can buy a non-display one on Play for 600 quid if you like!

I had a look at the P-Series in my local Harvey Norman when it first came out and the biggest drawback was the tiny screen coupled with that ridiculous resolution. My eyes were sore after 2 minutes.

You could easily install Windows 7 from a USB key (just run the 'setup.exe' from within Windows and the installer will run, copy the necessary files and reboot the machine).

I do not see it's reason to live, especially given the initial asking price, but even at this huge discount (which goes to show just how popular it was - NOT!) it is a waste of money. Better off to buy a nice netbook like the Samsung NC-10 or one of Dell's super-cheap offerings on the OUtlet.

The only possible use for it might be to connect it to your big flat-screen telly and use it as a kind of media player ??

Yeah it makes no sense at all, saw one in pcworld when they came out and i just didn't understand why anyone would buy it. The screen was far too smal to use and everything about it just didn't make sense.
It'd far too slow to use as a media player, and if that's what you were buying it for your money would be better spent buying something specifically designed to be a media centre type pc.

For anyone who might be interested (not many judging by this thread, but hey...) HN still have the white one, but have dropped the price to €399 (i.e. €239 after rebate). These do qualify for the Windows 7 upgrade, and it runs great on it.

I would love to get one of those for that price and with win 7. Does anyone know if this deal is in Dublin too?
