came home to find that the house alarm was going off. unmonitored alarm. entered the code a few times but still going off. checked contact sensors and they are fine. it normally goes off if the electricity goes off and comes back. any ideas?

Im no expert on alarms but make sure all mcb's at the fuse board are in the up position, and if your alarm panel is fed through a fused spur check the fuse.

No there is a battery in the panel and also in the bell box. Did you check for power at the panel?

What make of panel is it?
Has there been a power cut? If there has & its older Aritech panel (CP32 /33) try the factory code 01122.
If you disconnect the mains & battery from the panel the outside bell will ring.
On newer systems this will cut out after 20-30 minutes. On older systems it could go for hours (even days)

The back up battery in the alarm must be dead thats why the alarm would go off when the electricity is off. You would need a service on the alarm if it has being doing this. if the electricity went off today then the alarm is more than likely in an alarm condition thats why it is going off..
You could try turning the electricity off and turn it back on and enter your code. What type of alarm have you installed ?
