Is it just not downloading the updates?

It's to do with the firewall settings of the actual connection, which you can't do anything about, so your best bet is to give your hard drive to someone living off campus with their own interwebz and get them to download them for you.

See I dont know if its just not downloading the updates because the whole game wont work on xbox live until you have the updates. Thanks anyway. You are able to give the CSD a list of ports you want opened but I just wanted to know if this worked for anyone else?

It worked for me when I lived on-campus two years ago. Send them an e-mail with your room number, and probably the code on your port in your room, and tell them you would like the ports for Xbox Live opened up.

Should be done no problem, although they may not e-mail you back to tell you that they're open. I just happened to try sign in about a week later and found them to be working.
