Free Driving Lessons

I am a part qualified driving instructor with my final exam to sit soon.
I cannot teach (for pay) until qualified but need some practical teaching experience in order to be in a position to qualify. Catch 22 for me.
As a way around this I am offering driving lessons for free. I have my own fully insured dual controlled instructors car but will also teach in pupils own car provided they are of a suitable level.
I am based in the Bray/Greystones area of Co. Wicklow. Please do not contact me if you are not in this immediate area as, given that I am doing this free, I am not prepared to travel long distances.
Please contact me by PM, preferably giving me an idea of what driving standard, (or none), you think you are at. This is simply to allow me to reach as wide a variety of levels as possible.
    Many thanks,
    Scoile.

Is it only car lessons you can give? I'm not from the area but if I could get free truck lessons I'd certainly travel that far. Any part-qualified C instructors want some experience too? :D

Sorry Richie, car lessons only I'm afraid.
    BTW, still no takers, anyone???

Damn, it's a pity you weren't on earlier as i just did my test 2 weeks ago and i'm in greystones. It would have been great to have an instructor who wasn't in it for the money. anyway, i passed but i have a few friends who are in the greystones area who are learners and will ask them if they are interested.

Very kind of you. Good luck.:)

    HI scoile

I would just like to say fair play to you. Their are driving instructors out their who are not qualified and are teaching and charging 30-40 euros an hour.

I would love to have you on DrivingTestTips as your out there wanting to help people learn how to drive and pass the test.

    When you're qualified contact me.

    Regards

sorry but it is illegal to give driving lessons if you are not fully ADI Approved. (even if they are for free)

if you do see a non-ADI approved driving instructors giving lessons you are to contact the RSA or the Gardi and give details. Also the RSA have a ADI website for a list of approved driving instructors and also an email address where you can report unlicensed driving.

I wouldn't think so, anyone with a full license for 3 years can accompany a learner driver and teach them so why couldn't someone who is trying to qualify as an instructor be allowed:confused:

sorry i probably am wrong, it was the fact he had a dual controlled car that kinda would put it off. maybe there is a restriction on this dual controlled cars ?

actually is it not anyone with a license for two years who can act as a supervisor for people with learner permits ?

Understand where you’re coming from, but it is only illegal if they give lessons for reward.

Anyone who has held their unrestricted license for 2 years or more can accompany a learner driver, and drive a dual controlled car, however they cannot instruct for reward.

my bad, sorry bout that, never knew you didnt need anything for a dual controlled car.

anyway, back to the OP, i think it would come in very handy if you learnt some of the test route area's.

    Thanks everyone, all input welcome.
    Still no takers though.
I'd love to know the various test routes alright, they don't appear to be public knowledge. I don't believe in people "practising" the routes but realise the student would expect their instructor to know.
My wife did her test last year on day 1 or 2 of a newly opened SGS test centre in Bray. She was "followed" over every inch of the route by a driving school car. He parked and waited while she did the turnaround and reverse.
I'll definitely not be doing that!:D

i think the RSA themselves sell maps of test routes.

i cant remember if they just sell them all in the same book or if each one is separate but they do sell them :)

hi scoile, have you not thought about getting a [trainee licence] and getting an adi in your area to sponsor you

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17 scoile

    Hi Mark,
I've considered that but don't wish to get tied into anything.
Given too how quiet things seem, I can't see many current ADI's having enough work to "give" away to a trainee.
That said, I won't rule it out.

I just thought of a snag in the plan. Would your insurance cover you for this? Open drive policies only cover people with a full licence, and you'd probably have to be a professional for them to cover you as an instructor. Best to ring them if you're not sure.

Please believe me, there's no snag. I am fully insured.
In fact up to 2-3 months ago I could simply have advertised myself as a driving instructor and gone out there and charged anyone willing to pay, completely legally. I hear anecdotally of many unqualified "instructors" who are still doing this.
I've already explained why I am offering this. I am not some philantropist with nothing else to do. I want to be a driving instructor. When I am a qualified driving instructor then of course I will charge for my services.
In order to become a qualified driving instructor I must pass another test of my ability as an instructor. Therein lies my problem. I must be able to teach to be allowed to teach.
I understand some people are viewing this with a degree of scepticism but hey, ....

    actually,

do you do motorway training by anychance ????

everybody over here could do with it and i could too.

BUT you can only do this if the student has a full license.

and still.... what car have you got ?

actually scoile i am very serious about this, ive never got lessons or anything for motorways, all i know is to just drive in one lane and who knows when i might get caught out.

    Robbie,
I only read the first 2 pages of what you linked to (out of 9 pages).
I think you're trolling. Even if your not you say you have a full license so this has no real relevance to you.
I apologise if I'm wrong but suggest you go elsewhere.

    yup your wrong.

just because someone has a full license it dosent mean thats it, i am still learning, i only got my license a few weeks ago and have never driven on a motorway at all yet. are you refusing my motorway lesson which is a lesson i am asking for ?

there are no extra requirements to do such lessons, just as long the student has a full license.

No, not skeptical at all, I think it's a great idea. Was just pointing out the insurance thing in case you hadn't thought of it. Didn't mean to belittle your idea, when I said "professional" what I meant was "qualified." Sorry about the confusion. ;)

    OP, pretty good idea.
I'm surprised nobody has taken up your offer...I've full license so I'm good :)

As for the comments of another post looking for motorway lessons....wtf?

If you can drive in a city, on national routes and on country backroads then a motorway is the easiest thing in the world, the fact you have a full license means you have proven yourself capable to drive.

lads all i can say is do your test down the country, the testers pass you anyway, if your driving in the cultchie towns its sound and the drivier instructers are sound!

I'd definitely be interested in this. I live in Blanchardstown, but the girlfriend is in Shankill which is very near you. I have a full bike license and a bit of road experience with a daily commute. I'll send you a PM if need be.

Oh yeah, I can also drive (bike) to your location as long as I can throw my gear in the back seat :)

I'm currently learning to drive and would realy like to get lessons I'm living in Dublin city, but I'd happily get the dart (ironically) to bray for a free lesson!

    Thanks
