They sell new ones in Japan. I saw them selling them in a Manga shop/ Arcade.
I don't think there was region encoding on the super nintendo.
    I think they were 15,000 円.
This was 2 years ago though.

AFAIK region encoding on the Super Nintendo was accomplished by slightly differently shaped cartridges/slots

    man I am so tempted...
Actually, after checking e-bay, there are full systems with 2 controllers and games for 40 quid or a console by itself for a tenner...

Yes, the US SNES was a different shape to the PAL and Jap ones, which look the same. Afaik, Jap and PAL games will work in a US SNES if you take the casing off as the cart won't fit in it and vice-versa. However I don't think PAL and Jap games are interchangeable without the use of a special cart like a game genie or something

its not really about region encoding - its about 50hz Vs 60hz. Pal SNES play games slower than their US/Japanese counterparts ! so in other words, you're better off with a US/Japanese SNES than a PAL one.

Why bother? Just buy a usb controller, wire to hook your laptop up to your tv, emulator and then kablamo!!! Every snes game ever made for free!

It's just not the same. And not illegal either.
