    Can anyone recommend what home dye to use to dye my highlighted blonde hair brown? I can't afford to get it done in the hairdressers.

    If i were you I would go to a salon to get it done the first time. The hair needs to be pigmented when you are going back to brown. Did the same myself at the start of the year, one visit to the salon and i have been doing it myself ever since. It's worth one last visit and payment to a salon to get it done properly. Got it done in January and have been using home dyes ever since and they look great.

    Thanks for the reply!

    Guess I'll just let my roots grow really long and then make a trip to the salon.

    Might try go to a hairdressing school and get a student to do it.

    When dying hair blonde to brown, use a level 20, 30 or 40. For each 2 ounces of dye, you will it with 4 ounces of developer.

    Sorry but what do you mean by level 20,30 or 40

    Where do i get this? do i have to go to a specialist hairdressing shop?

    I was thinking of just using a home dye kit from the chemist

    Apply hair dye to your roots LAST because they will develop faster than the rest of your hair. Put gloves on to protect your skin and begin applying the dye to your hair. Make sure you do not miss any spots are you will get multi-colored streaks.
    If you have never used a particular type of hair dye, make sure that you test it on your skin prior to dying hair so that you will be able to identify if your skin will react negatively to the chemicals.Remember that every hair type is different. These tips work for me and many others, but some hair types can differ.

    The OP would only need 10-20 strength (used with semi permanent or permanent colours) at the most.
    30 and 40 strength are used with high-lift and ultra-high lift bleaches, respectively, and can burn the scalp if used incorrectly. The OP is going DARKER so she does not need this strength.

    I'm not sure if you are aware of this, given that your response was copied and pasted straight off eHow.com. Either way, only professional hairdressers can buy professional strength developer and colours in Ireland.

    OP you need to make sure you "fill in" your hair with red before putting a brown in. As your hair is lightened from brown up to blonde, it's red undertones are removed (all brown hair has red undertones- you can see them when your hair is going through the "orange stage" as you bleach it).

    brown -> red/orange -> blonde -> white blonde

    So when you are going back down to brown, you need to put the red back in. If you put in an ash or neutral brown dye straight onto blonde hair without replacing the red first, your hair would turn a greenish shade.
