Hi all, I'm running a 10k on Halloween night with some mates in Lough key just for a laugh. I need to buy a headlamp. I'd like something with good light and nothing too heavy either. Anybody got any experience with headlamps that could point me in the right direction?

I picked up a LED one up in TK Max for €8's I think, has 2 settings and also has a red flashing LED oprion, very comfortable also has a strap that goes from front to back.

Would it be good enough to run off-road picking out obstacles on rough ground? The route includes forest trails and stream crossing also. I don't wanna sprain an ankle on a stone or trip over a root during the event.

It's very good on the second setting, only thing I can't comment on yet is battery life as it takes 3 x 'AAA', just checked the make and it's Highlander, it's a low risk purchase at €8.

if TK max doesn't work out check out Argos. I got one there last year for about €12 euro I think. use it for running on silent creepy country roads in the dark,

The Preztl headlamps are great. Nice tight fit on the head, great battery life and excellent visibility.

    I'd recommend them without hesitation.

I think I paid around E30 for mine in Great Outdoors off Grafton Street.

I used this to run around howth recently. Its prettyy good but also expensive (e60-70 I think) but I can't fault it otherwise.

The best thing you can do now is by one early and do a few test runs.

This actually the one I picked up in TK Max, bulkier than than Petzls, it rotates downward also.

+1 on the Tikka Plus - I've used it for night trail races and found it great, even downhilling pretty fast in the pitch dark.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. I checked up on all your suggestions and weighed up all the options. I've picked this:

Nice and slim, brighter than the Petzl and cheaper too. I'm taking it out tonight for testing. I'll leave some feedback tomorrow.
