According to a fashion piece in the Guardian, cycling shorts are due to make a comeback in fashion circles next summer, part of a 90's revival, when they were originally popular (really?).

"Yes, really. It's partly the new sporty vibe and partly a decency thing. Set to be next summer's answer to leggings, the lycra knee-length short was seen on the most unlikely catwalks, from the short disco versions that peeped out from Armani's cocktail dresses to baggier versions at Marni worn loose over stripy leggings, via Donna Karan, where they were worn under everything. As with leggings, they're not meant to be worn alone. When you see how short and sheer everything is for next summer you'll be begging for a pair."

So you road bikers are the new (cough) "hipsters" that you're always banging on about here...

You're probably too young to remember, but there was a time when cycling shorts, a t-shirt and a whistle round your neck was quite the in thing.

Unlike you lot, we're not embarrassed to be fashionable.

I'm nearly 33, I remember the t-shirts (I am wearing one right now) and the whistles (only for special occasions these days), but cycling shorts? Was it a rave thing? I went to my first one around 1993 but I dont ever, ever remember anyone wearing cycling shorts.

Then again, the memory probably isnt as clear as it should be, from that period.

Whatever the eventual outcome of this enquiry, I blame FlickerX.

God, how could I have ever forgotten Axel Rose. He was inspired no doubt by this trendsetter:

    Reminds me of a joke.

Paddy walking on the beach in St Tropez and wonders why he doesn't get even a glance from any of the sunbathing ladies. Little worried confides in friend who advises Paddy to shove a spud down his bathing shorts.
Sure enough and with no hesitation Paddy obliges and heads back down the beach. By the time he reaches the end he can't wait to run from the guffawks sneers and pointing hands which he encountered on his stroll.
On bumping into his advisor as he leaves the beach he informs him of his embarrassing walk. His friend on seeing Paddy explains "Jaysus Paddy I meant the front of your shorts not the back!:p
