My brother is looking for a cheap laptop (preferably) or notebook. With both of these around the 300 mark they are the options.

The spec of the Acer is something along the lines of:

    Intel Celeron M900 2Ghz 1MB Cache
    Intel Graphics Media Accelerator
    1GB DDR2 RAM
    160GB Hard Drive
    WLAN
    Vista Home Basic
    1 yr warranty

Also think it has around a 15" screen. Spec seems ok to me for 300 euro. I'm hoping most of you are familiar with the NC10...cos i'm not. The laptop will be used primarily for internet, email, downloading. Probably no gaming, maybe some movies but not necessarily.

I read somewhere that the memory of the Acer is expandable to 4GB, can anyone elaborate on this, ie whether the memory slots are actually accessible so they can be expanded.

    Thanks

The Acer Extensa 5230 is a laptop, while the Samsung NC10 is a netbook. The Samsung, while one of the best netbooks available, only has an Atom processor, which is generally used in small devices, such as netbooks, nettops, etc, a 10.2" screen, something your brother may have issue with, and doesn't have a CD/DVD drive.

As such, I would go with the Acer Extensa 5230, since it meets your brothers requirements better, has a bigger screen and is also capable of supporting full HD (1080p) hardware acceleration of the VC1, H.264 and MPEG-2 codecs; all of which are used by the Blu-ray disc format, should your brother wish to upgrade the included DVD drive with a Blu-ray drive instead.

Thanks for that, actually didn't realise the NC10 had no CD/DVD drive, i simply took it for granted that it had one.
