Nnnggghhhh.... I am looking for a 24.8mm seatpost. They seem to be quite rare, and old. Looking around on d'internet seemed to uncover a few other people in a similar position to me.

So I was thinking, if I cant find one - what options do I have?
What size seatpost and 'shim' should I get if I wanted to do that?

Of course if anyone out there has one, I'd be grateful if you'd be willing to sell it...

Please, if anyone out there has used a shim before, some help is much needed.

I suspect your problem is not the shim, it's getting a seatpost narrow enough to start with.

Do you (or anyone) know any place that sells anything narrower?

I had a Google around last night (out of curiosity) and didn't find much. Seems to be a Peogeot thing. You probably need to speak to a shop which handles classic bike restoration, but they're less likely to be on t'internet.

Maybe you could get a slightly larger seatpost machined down to fit, but that's going to be a lot of material to remove from a 27.2 - it'd have to be pretty thick walled to start with.

edit: but this would be closer.

Did you try Jimmy Humphreys out in Finglas, he's around a long time (mid 80's) and may well have one lying around somewhere.

Or cycleways likewise might be old stock somewhere. Try the old shops not the new flashy ones

I have a fairly thick 25.4, where would I be able to get it machined down in Dublin? Someone in City Cycles mentioned that as well, but didnt know where this was possible.

    !!!! Yes !!!!
Slightly strange they dont have a picture up of it, but that looks promising.
I'll call them now in a minute once my voice wakes up.

There are a few 25mm posts on wiggle. Taking 0.2mm off one of these should be alright. You'll just need to get someone with a laid to turn it down for you.

CheGuedara, have you ordered off that site before? I tried to put in my credit card into the payment details screen at RBS, but then it told me that "payment cannot be processed, please contact merchant" (there is nothing wrong with my card or my credit!).

I also tried calling them but just got a fax dial tone.

    :(:(:(:(

22.2mm seems to be a not uncommon bmx size - could get one of those and a shim

Sorry man, haven't used them before - they seem to be legit though, though they trade as cycleparts.co.uk, cycleking.co.uk and professionalcycles.co.uk

I have found an alternative number for them however (using the oh so powerful googleFu) - give this a lash and see if it's not more successful 01268 571419.

They seem to prefer email on all of them for contact which is a little odd but no harm in pursuing them that way if the above is no use - if things feel a bit dodgy you'll still have not given them any creditcard info.

If it fits a peugeot try Centro @4567516, they are the importers (or were?) of puegeot bikes.

I got in touch with them via email, and they sorted out my order, their order system seems to have a gremlin with republic of Ireland orders. I was able to send them the money via paypal, so hopefully the seatpost will come through soon...
