Have a 2007 ford focus LX 1.4 petrol with 76k on the clock, remaining finance is €7,700 would like to trade it in for a diesel with similar mileage. Would we be better to try and sell privately or trade in for a similar year car, want to try to reduce finance payments if possible, what do ye think?

Diesel will be worth more even with the same mileage on it so that wont reduce payments. Is it 76k km or miles? Might be a hard sell if miles - there are loads of them out there. You could try sell privately, clear the finance and buy something cheaper

That car has to be worth 9k in a private sale.

Although I spotted a quite a few 09 1.6TDCi Styles being sold off for 15k a few weeks ago. I dont know how much that would affect it. The 1.4 Focus has always been a good seller.

IF you can sell it yourself, you could nearly pick up a tidy 08 diesel model come January.

In fairness 76k km on an almost 3 year old petrol car works out at just under 16k miles per year, hardly huge mileage.

I think the biggest problem is that there are so many 1.4 litre LX Foci out there for sale so a buyer can afford to be fussy.

Yea its 76thousand kilometers, well would be willing to trade down in years too to get a decent reliable diesel. Something around the €5k mark and use the balance to pay off a lump sum on the finance, thus reducing the payments. Would we get better vlaue trading in, or to sell privately?

76k km isn't too bad. A dealer might have a problem giving you money as at the moment the slightly older cars seem to be selling. Maybe try selling your own privately and then buy your diesel. Should reduce your payments no probs

Sell it privately if you need to get cash in hand. You'll get a better price anyway.
