I know that this was only run for the first time last year but I was wondering if anybody had heard anything about it?
I was thinkng of doing it but read a review that mentioned map reading and this is unsettling me a little.
Anybody have any info or thinking of doing it this January?

    any link to this???

Very little information on it. Wouldn't encourage me to book it. And both the online booking and the printed form are from 2009, no dates for 2010. Think I'll give it a miss and concentrate for the Connemara Ultra instead.

Perhaps we should set up a trans-ireland 5 dayer

A mass malin to mizen head run would be great. I'll help you organise it by saying I will definitely run it. :D

Have wanted to give the Mizen to Malin run a go for a long time - now if only I had the excuse of a race to take part in. That's two runners anyway - Hunnymonster, where are you ?

hmmm...we could be onto something here. Hunnymonster, Magnet and Enduro probably wouldn't pass something like this up. :D People cycle it all the time I wonder if there would be any scope for a group run of it.

I remember a few years ago a group of runners ran the Paris marathon and then ran to London to do the London marathon (forgive me if I have the details wrong - but I think that was it - it was a good few years ago) They just set out a shared itinerary and followed it under their own steam and at their own pace. They basically defined stages that they would all follow and set off at the same time each morning saying to each other "See you in so-and-so town this evening!" - imagine the sessions in the evening :-)

Once everyone had a car nearby and a phone you'd be set. Have we taken the thread too far off topic with our crazy idea?

I looked that up earlier, Dublin to Galway anyway. That'd probably be less painful and a bit more enjoyable.

    Hi All,

Malin to Mizen has been run quite a few times. The current record is held by Richard Donovan, at 5 days 14 hours, 15 minutes. Some information about that run can be found here.

Running accross the other dimension of the island has also been done, with a twist, as bray head to bray head. You can read about that here.

It's in the dark recesses of the back of my mind to try Malin to Mizen (or vice versa!) some day.

A smashing report :). Well done in the Causeway trail marathon btw!!

I think south to north is out of my league, but I might consider east to west, even if it's been done before. Then again, I still have to get beyond 26.2M in one run. might take me a while

I spoke to an English guy during the Conn Ultra 08(Ultraman1 may have been speaking to him also) who did that. From what I remember they did around marathon distance each day.

Enduro beat me to it with mention of the Bray to Bray thing. It's something I've been toying with for a while, holds more mystery for me than Dublin Galway for some reason.

As for the OP. There's plenty of ultras in the UK that would be fine races to take part in but may not have the most up to date web sites etc. I'd do a bit of googling if I were you!

    Where is this other bray?

Bray Head, westerly tip of Valentia island, Kerry. Next stop America, if the run isn't hard enough.

Seeing as I'm bored due to being unable to run and actually seriously think we should all do this...google maps puts Bray to Bray as roughly 380k or something but that Bray to Bray link posted by Enduro is 370 miles, so obviously they took a much longer route than the basic one on google maps. As much as I'd love to run 370 miles the 380k thing sounds much more feasible, we could always run something inbetween!

We've taken this thread massively off topic, but, would people really be interested in pursuing this? People do group cycles of Malin to Mizen all the time so I don't see why we couldn't organise a similar coast to coast run(I think we should run from Kerry to Dublin though so I can run home...and we'd have the amusements in Bray to play on when we got here. Bumper cars anyone? :D ). Could also see us raise a sizable sum for a nominated chairty and hey, it'd be lots of fun. We don't have to go around setting official records or all running together, as Mick Rice said we could all set off at the same time every morning and have a b 'n' b booked every 30 miles or so to meet up and sleep for the night.

    Count me in!!!! serious.

I would love to give the malin to mizen ago but if it's bray to bray I'll take it. I think windows would be feb, or next november/december so not to clash with other events or running in the heat in Summer( a hot summr would be a fine thing)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,340 ✭✭✭TFBubendorfer

Mizen Head to Malin Head (or the other way round, I'm not picky) is actually on my to-do list, though I don't know if I will ever get round to it.

Bray Head to Bray Head sounds just as good, though. I have a place to sleep at either end. :)

    Seriously, I'd be really tempted!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 930 ✭✭✭jeffontour

Keep me in the loop on this one. I've to put my provisional calendar of events for next year in place in the next week or two. I'd be very interested in a jaunt across the country in a relaxed fashion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 472 ✭✭Magnet

    My "serious" 2 cents..

If I/we are to take time off work to do a really long run I`d prefer a really long run so Malin to Mizen would get my vote...
Also one week should be plenty of time to do it.... Shouldn`t it?

Something I too would love to do but it'd be beyond me right now I think, not all of us have run 100 miles in one go you know. :D

I will start looking into this and Magnet is on the list to do it because I know that if when we get it organised she won't be able to resist taking part.

Jesus but we have gone from a relatively simple, I thought, 45 miler to runnin across Ireland for a week!
I think that would have to be near the end of next year before I would be ready for it. How many miles a day would we be talking about. 30 - 40?

Hate to bring it back to topic but has anybody heard anything about this run? I think I will just enter and go for it.

I think if we could agree on a month next year we could get things moving here.

I think November would be nice!!!????!!

If we could agree on a month then maybe among us we could talk about a training schedule..... I'd be interested in hearing what Enduro would advise.

ALso how many runners would we need to make this happen?? what would be the min amount???

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,366 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

I would prefer November or December myself. Give us plenty of time to train. I'm already starting to look into it to try and get things moving. There wouldn't be a minimum amount of runners for it, it'd be an entirely independent event, the way I'm looking at it now anyway it would be, similar to people who just up and decide they're going to cycle malin to mizen. I should know more within the next couple of weeks.

As for training plans, lots and lots and lots of running should suffice. :D

Edit: Should the thread be split mods?

Yes, November or December is probably ideal. That way I can use Dingle and Dublin as training runs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,791 ✭✭✭Enduro

If I was to do it I would do it in the summer. The main reasons being light and weather.

One thing that i have on my to-do list is Dublin - Galway, from Grand Canal dock following the path along the Grand Canal to Shannon Harbour, then up to Shannon Bridge & Ballinasloe along the river , then to Galway somehow.

I think were all trying to avoid summer weather but it is Ireland so you could get frost and rain in summer and blazing heat in winter. Someone suggessted to me yesterday that we could run it along the coast instead of running through the country. Which just made me want to make running the circumference of ireland the big run for all of us after this and malin mizen. :D

Being realistic-ish, you're more likely to get drier sunnier warmer calmer weather in the summer than the winter, which of course is more likely to be wetter colder windier and darker. I know which kind of weather I'd prefer to be out in for every waking moment for 5 or 6 days in a row! Think of trying to motivate yourself to start day 4, after 3 days of rain, having gone through god-knows how many sets of running gear, all piled up in a soggy rotting mess in the back of a vehicle, in the dark, with horizontal freezing rain blowing into your face

I'd be inclined to Bray to Bray for some time in August. It there is common interest in this sobeit.

If not there's plenty more years to go!!
