Any recommendations of good European films from this year?

Something along the lines of Das Leben Der Anderen, Die Welle, Volver?

A walt with Bashir. I think it was made in 2008 but I only saw it this year. What a film, one of the best Ive ever seen. This movie will haunt you, theres not a day goes by that I dont think about it. If only every film was as good as A waltz with bashir..........

Please dont let the animation put you off. Im not a fan of animated films normally and I was reluctant to give this a chance because of that. But someone convinced me to give it a try and Im glad I did. Its shot the same way as A scanner darkly.

Hasn't really been a standout year for European cinema IMO - perhaps I've just seen less, or less are getting released, but there haven't been too many standouts.

Martyrs (last year technically, only released on DVD a few months ago though) is well worth checking out if you have the stomach for it. Heavy and graphic viewing, but ambitious and thought provoking horror film.

O'Horten is a peculiar but worthwhile recent released. Strange story about a Scandanavian man retiring from his job as a train driver. Some memorable scenes and imagery, if a bit uneven overall!

I don't know if I've Loved You So Long was this year or last year, but wonderful little French gem which is definitely worth checking out.

Can't really think of anymore off the top of my head! Let the Right One In of course is fantastic if you haven't seen it already. I'm sure there are more too, just can't think right now!

Saw that during the glasgow film festival last february, i really enjoyed it.

    Beautiful soundtrack by Kaada too.

I saw a very good French film called Mark of an Angel about a woman who lost her baby daughter and thinks that a girl she sees a few years later is her. She stalks the girls family convinced it's her daughter.

    Very creepy film.

Also Mesrine parts 1 & 2 are great crime movies.

The director of Volver, Pedro Almodovar, released a new film earlier in the year called "Broken Embraces". It's a very different film to Volver but if you enjoyed it, it may be worth checking out.

Unfortunately, you're not going to see 2009 in world cinema start to roll out until about November after the conventional festival circuit has dried up and anything not getting wide distribution begins to appear on DVD. The world cinema that appears in the IFI is there because of that stupid European cooperative exhibition scheme which makes it cheaper to screen films subsidised up the hole by the various states. As a result, we get bland films about French fashion designers instead of innovative festival darlings. So unless you can afford to travel the circuit yourself we'll all be waiting for the DVD releases.

Contrary to the sensationalism and bad journalism surrounding it, Von Trier's Antichrist is actually very good.

I'm looking forward to seeing The Palme D'Or from Cannes this year, Das Weiße Band (The White Ribbon.

Also, the French prison movie about Corsican gangs, Un Prophete, has had great reviews.

Valhalla Rising is the one I am waiting for.

Mads Mikkelsen is magnetic onscreen normally, and looks like he will be continuing with another strong role in Die Tur later this year, but the Valhalla Rising slot is the kind of role he was born to do imho.
