Combine DTT and NTL Analog into single cable?

I have a Samsung LE40B530 with a single coax port. It can pick up the dtt tests, now and next, teletext etc. no problem. I also have an NTL analog TV connection, which I use for BBC, Setanta sports etc.

To switch between one and other I'm having to swap the cables and retune, which isn't practical at all.

Is it possible to combine the DTT and NTL analog cables into a single coax?

get a cheap splitter (99c). combine the two cables.. see if that works

Could you use a VHF/UHF diplexer such as those used for aerials? UPC analogue in the VHF end and DTT in the UHF end?

I got an inline filter from maplin a while back which I put on the aerial line coming in. It filtered out the vhf signals which were interfering with the ntl analogue channels but still allowed the uhf signal thru for the dtt. Hooked it up temporarily but then they went & changed it to Mpeg4.

Thanks everyone for getting back to me. Sugarman, I hadn't thought of using the the video, I have one in the attic that I'll dust off tonight.

....ideally though I would like to have all my channels on the TV remote.

is this the way yours was setup? Did it work ok for you?

Karsini, is this the kind of diplexer you mean?

Yeah that looks similar to what I was thinking of. The only issue I could see here is that Discovery, E4 and Channel 4 are on UHF in some areas so this method might block them out too. If they're on VHF then you'd be fine.

True they are only channels you will see when connecting a NTL cable to UHF - where they moved off VHF altogether ? Or just mirrored.

E4 & C4 used to be very low on cable VHF around 56/64 megs.

If that doesnt work (it should of course), you need to use either use a Y splitter and include a VCR scarted in the chain as suggested above or alternatively if you want to continue with NTL just get the digital box ans get off "analogue". A further option would be to get a FTA sat box and get rid of NTL altogether.

Peats/Maplin may have em. The likes of Freesat on phillipsburgh avenue maybe too

If you are in Dublin a Triax 50/52 diplexer would do the job.

I am in Dublin, and as mentioned above, E4, Channel4 and Discovery are coming through NTL in UHF.

What is a Triax 50/52 diplexer & where can I get one? I'm a bit out of might depth here, and can't manage to find anything in google....

Yeah this is the way I set it up. It worked grand for a short time but then I changed it around for a satellite setup after everything went Mpeg4

This is the filter I used but I'm sure any of the ways above would work.

Yes and more as its a 2 way combiner for 2 Frequency ranges.

    The input ranges being 47- 710 Megs (Ch 2-50) and the other 718 - 862 (51-69).

With your DTT being at 738 Megs (Ch 54) being isolated on one side and the VHF and lower UHF frequencies on the other.

Never seen one before always thought they split them from channel 21 onwards.

Places to check if they have it: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=155714

This sounds perfect. I'm going to shop around now to see if I can pick one up.

Is there possibly a more generic name for this type of a combiner?

You better be specific (I have never seen one that splits in those frequency ranges - especially from 47 megs)

Go with whats in maxg's link ie a Triax TFC 5052 Diplexer (TFC/08) or Triax TMC5052 Diplexer STP (TED/19).

Check with the companies in the link above.

Depends on where you are. In Drumcondra they have been taken off VHF altogether while in Ballyfermot they're on both.
