Could this work in Ireland?

I have seen a diagram to make it possible to watch one program and record another from a cable feed using a VCR.
Essentially the incoming cable signal is split into 2 - each going via coax to separate decoder boxes. Then 1 box feeds the signal to another splitter - with one cable from there going to TV RF In and the other to the RF Out of the VCR.
The second decoder box RF Out feeds a cable to the RF In of the VCR.
    Three questions:
Could that work OK in Ireland?
    Do you forsee any problems.
Could I substitute a HD DVD recorder instead of the VCR do yuo think?

    Grateful for any input

You can split an analog signal only i.e. a terrestrial aerial or NTL/Chorus analog feed. You cannot split a digital signal e.g sky unless you want to record the same channel.

You run the cable into the back of the vcr first or dvd recorder and back out of there to the tv for playback or to tune in the analog to the tv.

The more splits the worse the picture will become. And you really should only need a split where the signal is being send to a seond room. Better to use a distribution amp than a splitter where possible.
