I replaced my sky+ box with a sky+ HD box and the guy who installed it said that I could use the sky+ box in a another room and be able to record with it (free channels obviously)

    Would this be correct?

A Sky+ box cannot record anything without a valid/current subscription...

Yeah thats what I thought. Its just yer man said that once I had the old card that was paired with that box then it should work.

    Ah well, no harm done.

Try it and see if it works. I have an old UK Sky FTV card and it works the Sky+ features on any Sky+ box as it was at one stage paired to a Sky+ in the UK.
Not sure if the same idea works with an expired Irish Sky card though. No harm trying it in any case.
Steveon would probably be able to advise you a bit more on this, it was him who told me that the UK FTV cards still activate the Sky+ features.

I set it up and the only thing unique I seen was that I could view a couple of the recorded films etc from BBC1 & 2 that were stored on the hard drive. The only problem was that a little message kept popping up every few minutes looking for a valid card. Pressed back up and it would disappear.

But stuff that had been recorded from the "home" stations couldnt be viewed. I used the card that was paired with the box up to the time the new cards came out a few months ago.

Dont think its going to work so it will do for the free channels in any event.

IF i get a fta card ,can i use that to authorise the sky plus box.
At the moment i cant record anything,i have no subscription.
I just wanna record the vault ,bbc 2,eg from the free channels.
OR can i borrow a card from some1 that has a sky subscription.
Do i HAVE to subscribe to some channels to do any recording at all.

As far as I know you must have a valid Sky subscription in order to use the Sky+ box to record or view any previously recorded material.

Probably the best you can do is subscribe for the minimum amount which I think is around €22 per month and that will then allow you to record whatever channels you are subscribed to together with the other free channels.
