    Right,
We're buying a car that has been off the road. Tax is out by a few months. How do i go about taxing this. Once i receive documents from shannon can i just tax it or do i have to get the original owner to declare it off the road.

    Thanks in advance.

    K

The original owner would only declare it off the road if he/she was going to re-tax it and keep it...

Once you get documents then you can tax it...

On of my friend's was in this situation before and when she went to tax it she was asked to cough up for the period untaxed even though the log book clearly showed the date of new ownership. She didnt pay it, left and got "the off the road" part stamped in the Gstation and got it taxed okay as she expected.
Depends on the motortax official on the day too I'd say.

You are 100% NOT liable for the road tax during the period the car was owned by previous owner.
Just fill in an RF100 form & go to motor tax office, once you have VLC back from Shannon.
The appropriate form is available in Motor Tax office or you can download/print it off from:

thats what I knew to be the case too, I reckon the Official was starved of oxygen at some stage or was having a bad hair day asking for unpaid period.

Sounds like a story you heard in the pub

@kikel - there is nothing you need to do about the car being out of tax. You can tax the car as soon as the car is registered in your name (documents from Shannon as you say). You will owe tax from the first day of the month that you registered the car in your name.

It's a bummer if you bought the car on the 28th/29th/30th because you have to pay from the first of that month even though you only owned it for 3days of that month!

This is where your local friendly Garda comes in.

do you mean by asking them to stamp the RF100 form?
The Garda will stamp it no bother as its you making the statement that it wasn't in use. However, the plethora of ANPR technology could easily dispute your claim! And then you will be in real trouble.

There is a box on the tax renewal form for "past owner period". You simply fill in the dates here to cover the last taxing of the vehicle up to the day before you registered it. You're only liable for tax on the vehicle while it's registered in your name.

When you fill in the "Off the road " part, you are declaring that the vehicle was not used on a public road by you or with your consent.

What exactly are you suggesting here? Something like "yeah that's my car but I wasn't driving it, honestly, Garda"?

OK so the following question would be "did you report it as stolen?".
