Possible to Weld a Catalyst

I got my car serviced today (BMW 3 series E46) and was told that the secondary catalyst needs to be replaced. There is a slight rattle from the exhaust.

The guy told me that it may be possible to get it welded. I never heard of this and he did not offer to do it.

Anyone else know about this? If so what is involved and is it expensive? Also where would I get it done(I am based on the northside of Dublin)?
    Thanks

If it's rattling a weld won't cure it but a couple of whacks with a hammer might.;)

Id also go with the replace option. Replaced my Back box yesterday E164 from GSF in clondalkin.

It makes such a difference to performance. Different car to drive :)
