Archiving off sky+hd ?

    Hi,

Search is not working so I'm sure this has been asked before but please humour me...

Had the sky door to door round the other night & the offer is very attractive (I was holding onto UPC because I was hoping they'd be doing BB soon, looks like being two years now...)

I have a HD/DVD recorder hooked up to my UPC pace box & it's grand for recording.

From time to time however I like to archive stuff off it onto DVD (Eamonn McThomas's Dublin is the most recent). All for personal use only.

Is this possible to do with a sky+ bok ? I know it records to it's internal hard drive, but is it possible to ectract from that to my DVD recorder ? Would it be the same if I went for Sky+ HD ?

Any other option such as some sort of sky decoder in my PC ?

    Thanks

Yes, you simply do the following:

    1) plug Scart 2 of the Sky + box into your DVD recorder
    2) start playing the show on the Sky+ box that you want to archive
    3) click record on the DVD recorder.

Sky HD would be the same, the only difference is that the archived recordings would obviously be in SD and not HD.

    Thanks BK.

Why would the archived recordings be in SD though ? Is it because the DVD recorder is SD ?

Is there any way to do it through a PC ?

The signal is SD, because it's using a SCART lead. For HD you need HDMI (digital) or component (analogue). DVD recorders don't support recording over HDMI for copyright reasons. DVD recorders usually don't support component connections either, although there are exceptions. The newer SKYHD boxes only have HDMI, older ones have component outputs also. DVD is not an ideal medium for HD in any case due to the high bandwidth and data storage requirements - that's why Blu-ray was developed.

You might need to be aware that SKY+ boxes (not sure about SKYHD) seem to be causing issues when transferring certain programmes to DVD recorders or to VHS video recorders. There have been numerous reports of people having copy protection issues with SKY+ boxes, particularly since the new white cards have been issued. It would seem that Macrovision is being switched on in the SKY box by settings on certain programmes which results in either the DVD recorder reporting an error message like "this programme cannot be recorded due to copy protection" or else recording the programme with a rolling image and sound disturbances. It's not entirely clear whether this is a software error in the SKY+ boxes or whether it's part of a deliberate policy to prevent the recording of certain programmes. It seems to be random, not always repeatable, but is reported on UK forums quite regularly.
