With the release of the new Uncharted title next week i decided to give the original a play through again, and i have to say i find it all a bit meh.I mean i can't fault the production values, the script and story are both top notch but where i find it a bit lacking is in the gameplay,it's all just a bit easy, the puzzles aren't exactly taxing on the brain and while the gun play is fast paced and fun to play it's not exactly hard.I died twice in the whole single player campaign on the hard setting, and one of those times was from a miss timed jump.None of this is going to stop me from buying the new one next friday but a little bit more lara croft puzzle solving i.e i know where i have to go but how the hell do i get there, and a little less hand holding as in drakes fortune would be a whole lot better imo.Anyway as i said i'm still picking the new one up and the co-op sounds like it might be fun.

Well there's always one person who doesn't like a game and in this instance, its YOU!!!!!:D

If you want a Tomb Raider game, then buy a tomb raider game. 99.9% of the people who bought Uncharted thought it was a brilliant blend of action, adventure, humour with some puzzles thrown in. The storyline was actually pretty decent as well which is very uncommon in most games nowadays.

I'll be waiting in line (i.e. stepping on people who get in my way) for Uncharted 2 on release day as the game reviews alone have been singing its praises. The best review I saw was one where they said that while Uncharted was a great game, Amongst Thieves leaves its predecessor in the shade. It has to be a new benchmark in PS3 gaming to get that kind of praise imo.

I agree with some of the OPs points. I liked Uncharted a lot but it would have been improved by being a tad more difficult. Certainly the puzzles were a breeze.

I hope Amongst Thieves is a bit more difficult.

Agreed. Found the middle portion of the game particularly bland gameplay wise.

Very repetitive gunplay with little fear of dieing. Puzzles hopefully will be a little more taxing in the sequel.

+1, first was way over-hyped. Voice-acting, script and pacing saved it IMO.

All I want is better pacing in the combat and a less buggy cover system and this has a chance of stealing my game of the year from persona 4.

I just found the combat annoying for the majority of the game:

Move into cover, shoot guys as they come towards ya, shoot next wave as they come towards ya......and the next wave.......and the next......and the next.

Cant fault the script, voice acting or graphics but the gameplay made me just turn the game off and play something else out of boredom. I only played into the later chapters to just say I finished the game but enjoyed them a lot more.

I just played Drake's Fortune a few weeks ago and very much enjoyed the experience. In terms of cheesy action game and production values (submarine, for example), it feels like the sort of thing an Indiana Jones game should be, and Sully is a kick ass supporting character. The mechanics are rock solid, and the game is probably at its best when scaling ridiculous heights (the castle level). The combat worked well, but I'd agree that the respawning enemies were pretty infuriating. Occasionally the combat was smooth and energetic, but at other moments just felt like it was in the way. And the puzzles were stupidly easy, but I was glad they didn't get in the way like they would during Tomb Raider's worst excesses.

It is simply a fun, enjoyable game and taken as a summer blockbuster it succeeds admirably. If the sequel is really a notch above the first then it should be a pretty great experience, but obviously one that won't be too revolutionary. Just fun. I completely agree with Retr0gamer - if it plays as it should this could well be one of my games of the year (although like Retr0 it may not quite surpass Persona 4, although comparisons between the two games are nigh on impossible!).

Over-hyped? Maybe over praised but it was one of the first great dark horses of the PS3. No, not at all over hyped.

Loved the first alot, just fun to play and enjoyable. Had some problems but they didn't really take anything away from it.

I consider myself a bit of a PS fanboy but i definetly wouldn't call the xbox sh!t, you can't take away the fact that it revolutionized online play and has some stellar exclusives.

Anywho. I've completed U1 once on normal, finished it in 2 days after xmas day. Tried playing it again on hard a few months back and i ended up stopping playing when i hit the dragged out mid section. Apparently the only dragged out part in the 2nd one is a ninja type section in the beginning, but other than that it's supposed to be brilliant.

You must be brilliant, I died loads towards the end of the game! I'm playing on Crushing now, I want to get the Platinum trophy before the second one comes out. It's proving to be extremely difficult, each shootout is a serious challenge!

playing Drake 1 at the moment really enjoying it and considering it only cost me 14 euro , its pretty good value for money versus some new release games topping 50 + :D

Agree totally. There's always someone who wants to make a point by going against the vast majority because it makes them feel important and not one of the millions of flies that eat ****e.

No offence anyone, I do it myself by slating the whole Halo series every chance I get. But that really was crap. But I thought Drakes Fortune was an outstanding game.

Seriously though, I think you hit the nail on the head when you talk of a benchmark in PS3 gaming. The PS3 to this day hasn't really come up with something the Xbox isn't quite capable of. Before you all attack me, yes I thought MGS4, Infamous and KZ2 were excellent games, I just never thought they were fullfilling the PS3's potential

I have an Xbox 360 and I love it so I don't think I'm a fanboy. When buying multiplatform games I generally lean towards the PS3 because I WANT it to be better.

Despite all the hype surrounding the PS3 before it's launch, it still hasn't pullled ahead of the Xbox.

But on Friday it will start to.

Really really looking forward to the Uncharted 2, anything Ive seen looks amazing.

Uncharted 1 has been one of my favourite games on the PS3 and you can pick up for next to nothing now, it’s a must have title imo.

I bought this a year ago for €20, and still haven't gotten around to playing it yet. Must try to get stuck into it this week.

I haven't been able to find a copy of it on the shelves in any of the main shops for the last few weeks. Used or new.

I really enjoyed the first one, not exactly to the same extent as some people. Not sure it would be my favourite game this generation or anything but I did like it a lot. Really looking forward to Uncharted 2, why did Brutal Legend have to come out on the same day though?!? Argh!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,977 ✭✭✭johnny_adidas

there was a rumour that people who had platinum'd the first game (or perhaps gotten the 1000 reward points) would be rewarded with something extra in the sequel (id assume extra weapons off the bat in mutiplayer or something along those lines), anyone know if this is true?

Have to say I wasn't overly impressed with it either, in fact didn't even bother playin the whole way through. Just seemed boring and there was very little, in fact nothing really that I hadn't seen before.

People who've beaten the first one get $100,000 in game money.

Is tht done by trophies or just beaten the game? I beat it before trophies were released...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,485 ✭✭✭Mr. K

There seems to be debate about what actually gives you the money, whether it's having a save at 100% or having the trophies. I can't tell you for sure, I guess we'll see on Friday!

    Just finished the first one.

Great game, looks amazing, and in my opinion the duck and cover gunplay is superior to Gears of War.
The platform/climbing sections are a little bit of a letdown though. You're held by the hand and there's only ever really one way to go.
