    hi all.

im just wondering. iphone 3g 3.0 unlocked, jb

say i use skype/fring with 3g unrestrictor and backgrounder - and when im out and about it uses the 3g data connection, great.

what if i get home and wifi is there, does the iphone switch to wifi or does it stay using the 3g data connection?

in that line of questioning, which method does the iphone use preferentially to connect around if wifi is available?

would help me know how to sort out data usage with meteor - since they wont allow me to get the unlimited data addon.

    Cheers

    Wifi is preferred.

Easy way to prove this is when your at home
go to www.whatsmyipaddress.com and see whether it's using wifi or mobile carrier.

    The default is wifi though

I think when the phone is asleep, it uses 3G even in a wifi area for push email.

This may mean that you will be using some 3G data when at home.

The iPhone has a logo beside the carrier name and if it is using wifi, there is a symbol like arcs coming out from a point.

The problem is that when it is asleep, the wifi switches off.

If you don't want the phone to use 3G data, just delete the APN settings under the network section of the settings.

Unless you have no 3G coverage, in which case it will use the Wifi. As I found out when I was abroad with data roaming switched off, it was still downloading my email while it (and I) slept over the hotel's Wifi network.
If you don't want the phone to use 3G data, just delete the APN settings under the network section of the settings.
Or you can actually turn off 3G without having to delete anything.

if i turn 3g off, does it not then use edge to download things?
ive found a program called insomnia, it keeps wifi on when screen off and with backgrounder, that works with fring/skype.

unfortunately both these programs dont work with bluetooth yet, which is a shame really.

thanks for the advice. hopefully not too much data will be used.

any programs that can monitor data separating the 3g and wifi usages?
