First NCT & Dates Question...

I've VRT'd and taxed my 924, so am now looking down the barrel of an NCT test. Before I go getting the car registered on their system I want to make sure I don't shoot myself in the foot.

The cars first registration date is 1st November 1983. The date/anniversary explanation on the NCT site is confusing me...

Every two years from 1983 would bring us to November 2009, but I've a sinking feeling that the "every two years" anniversary is calculated from 2000 onwards - which would mean the next official due date is November 2010. Is this true and would this mean I'm stuck doing an NCT this year and next year?

    Any thoughts?

Also, in the actual test are there slightly different criteria applied to older cars in any areas?

    CHEERS!

Best thing is to give them a buzz, 01-4135900. Emissions data etc are based on figures from when the car was new, so they're not nearly as strict as for a newer car with cat etc.

I wanted to have my facts straight before I rang them - just in case there was any advantage to leaving the NCT until November (optimistic I know ;)).

AFAIK you can do the NCT up to three months early, but the due date doesn't change.

The NCT goes from Date of First registration, so in your case it would be 1st Nov 2009.

There are differing emissions for different years. You'll have to look it up in the manual to be sure. The rest of the test (suspension, brakes, lights, bodywork etc) are as per modern car (with certain execptions - semaphore indicators etc) and the car should pass it no problem.

If you get the car NCT'ed now, you'll get 2 years and one month (ie due Nov 2011)

Cool - if that's the case I'd be ecstatic. :)

The NCT FAQ confused me into thinking that every car registered prior to 1991, was technically due in 2000 - and every two years thereafter.

actually im in the same boat as just paid vrt and looking to get nct...car first regtistered 28/11/88 so that means if i test it within the next month where do i stand will it have to be done next yr again?????

If you NCT it within the next month chiefwiggum, you'll be doing it again next year.

Reading the above, testing car on or after 28/08/2010 will get you 2yr 3 months. Before that, it'll get you an expiry of 27/11/2010.

Advance apologies for hi-jacking your thread Dades but as search function is down and I want to avoid the repitition of starting a new thread.

I had to buy a car quickly to keep me going for a while during the Summer after somebody crashed into me and wrote of my own car. The car is 2000 reg and was not nct'd last year and it is up since mid November 2008. I have since got a new car so its just sitting idle at home. I don't want to test it now as would probably end up getting less than a year out of it by the time I get a date and tested as it stands. If I sold it at all now Id hardly get 2 brown halfpennys for it without a test. If I booked the car in to be tested on are after mid August 2010, coming up to that time would I get the 2 years and three months out of it or just up until mid November, 2010. Is there anything different about the situation where a NCT is skipped?

i think you can only get a car tested 3 months in advance if it is currently ncted otherwise you would be getting it tested 21 months late and only get 3 months nct for your money ,i am open to correction

The criteria for testing imported cars was changed last year - the cert will be valid for 2 years after date of registration Ireland, not the anniversary of 1st registration when new.

Just confirmed this with the NCT people, thanks kja1888. :)

    Good news for you chiefwiggum!

Also, maybe that information should be in our sticky somewhere?
