Generally speaking yes you need a GUI swipe card or type in the number on the back to enter in open competitions. However I'm sure a few some clubs might let you off so to speak. When you join a club you'll pay a fee of around €20 as a GUI fee and you'll get your card. For team events to my knowledge, you dont, well I haven't been asked to produce a card anyway.

i have a gui but a couple of my mates don't,they are playing opens all year and obviously discarding their cards, only club we've played in this year that insisted was bray as their machine for swiping is behind the counter, clubs just want the revenue, they don't seem to care, they just say they've just joined a new course and don't have card or hcp or they just say nothing

Op tbh you have no business playing an open competition without GUI membership or a handicap, some clubs won't ask you for your GUI number when entering an open competition, (because it's more than likely assumed you have one) but that doesn't give you licence to "chance your arm" .
Golf after all is a self policing sport and is based on honesty and integrity, if you lack either or both of those traits then by all means go ahead and "chance your arm".
Otherwise let the host club in question know your situation and they'll look after you the correct manner.

Did you read the OP's question at all, or did you just glimpse at it and rattle off whatever s##te that first popped into your vacant head.
The answer to the OP's question is "Yes" you need a GUI card to enter an open competition. There is no grey area it's a yes or no answer.

yes i did read the op question and it was covered by the second post.I think we all know to enter the comp you need a gui hcp, however with only a rare open filling a timesheet these days i don't see the problem.
I can guarantee that if you take any open comp and see how many scores are actually returned compared to the amount of playerst who entered you would be very surprised, yes some are just tearing up their cards but this is widespread, the clubs know about but they don't care,CASH IS KING,that's my point.

Omg dnt go getting your knickers in a knot:eek: I only asked a simple question. The "chancing my arm" part was not meant to upset people so much... or more so just you. I wasnt sure how the land lies in respect to these comps so i wanted to find out. Most clubs open comps are vastly cheaper than their green fees so why wudnt i enterplay and dump the card.......... dnt the various clubs need the money either way? and dnt go getting all high n mighty in relation to the gui handicap, with your honesty n integerity stament:rolleyes: I thought we all played to enjoy ourselfs and aid newcomers to our sport out?? maybe you dnt.....

I don't see any issue with this at all.
Yes, you need a GUI handicap to enter and win the competition. But you're not doing any harm whatsoever by playing and ripping up your card at the end.
The clubs still gets the same income. Everyone else in the competition is more likely to win.
The only possible adverse affect i can see is if the timesheet is full and there are gui members who can't get a slot. Not really a biggie though.

its no big deal , i played many an open without a gui . as some one else said the clubs are only delighted to take your cash in todays financial climate.
