Has anyone here got one of these? What is the insurance like? its probably quite painful due to the power and the fact that its an import.
Also, does anyone know which tax regime newly imported cars fall under? ie an 04 or an 05 car that is imported and registered this year..Im sure it makes a big difference between 614eur for the old system or the probably 2000eur on the new system.

its pre 08 the tax is based on engine size....

Insurance, will be high for a 2l for the reasons you said..
best to check it out before you buy

Do you mean for motor tax or VRT? Every imported pre-'08 car has motor tax based on engine size. The VRT is always based on CO2 for imports, pre or post '08.

An '04-'05 2L will be taxed at €614 per year. Insurance is another question entirely.

I assume the VRT will be paid by the importer. I will not be buying a car that has not had the VRT paid.
So the Motor tax will be based on the engine size. I
know there are alot of variables with the insurance costs but if someone who has the car give me a ballpark figure that would be great.

There heavy on petrol alright..... well if your heavy footed, use a leg gt which is asingle turbo and when i put my foot down you can watch the needle drop :(....

Since its a turbo its in the highest insurance bracket.

The standard 2L i know is about 1,000 (with 3 NCB, Full licence, over 21)

    ...oh and MALE of course...

insurance company would probably pay a female to drive it :/

Do some research before you buy on the actual car.

Not a car to buy unless you know the pitfalls.

Imports are prone to detonation if ran on 95 octane meaning its possible if you don't take care of it to kill it within a week.

Can be fixed with a remap but cost depends on ecu revision! (as certain models can be flashed with open ecu older ones cant)

As for tax make sure its on the old system or you will be poor. Insurance wasn't too bad when i looked at them and and was quoted 1100 a year or so back based on being 27 with a clean licence and 4 years no claims. (bought a silvia instead)

Best ring around, the price of insurance has more to do with you than the car. FWIW, I pay €560ish for a Forester 2.5XT.

Well i wouldnt touch an imported scooby withouth a remap.

About a year ago you could insure legacy withouth any hassel, insurance companies just didnt knew what the fudge is that. Now they know...

And yeah, any scooby will drink the juice, and after it finished it will ask more ;)

    Amazing car thought :D

The only time you need to remap an import if your planing on running more boost!

my brother had a type R sti 4 pushing 301 bhp didnt get remaped.
I know of two young ladys booth with b4s driven every day and arnt remapped. and running fine!
My parents have a leg gt bilstein model thats not remaped. been in the country two and half years.
Another person I know had a sti 5 for a year was'nt remapped....

Im currently driving a B4 RSK. As stated pop over to the ISDC and do some research.

With regards to insurance im 29, M, 3 YR's NCB and pay 960 fully comp. Petrol is fairly heavy but so is any 2L Twin turbo car, you don't buy one for economy. Servicing is dearer then a standard car and timing belts need to be done at 100k. A car with documented service history is definitely worth paying a little more for.

If buying one try get one that has already had this done and it NEEDS a clifford alarm, a lot will already have one but factor about 800 for one if not.

With regard to the detonation issue read up and make your on mind up. Some say a remap is a must, other's run their car fine for years by sticking with Maxol E5 + lucas/nf octane booster. But if your modifying the car/changing the breathing a remap is a must so do all these before you map it.

Performance is great, the sound of that boxer engine is beautiful. It's a big enough car with lots of room in the back with a decent oul boot if this is a requirement. 4WD is a good bonus.

Personally I've had a good run with mine so would have no reserve recommending one.

There are great subaru legacy forums...

    http://uklegacy.com/forums/index.php

I had one of these cars for a while. Great car, not as fast as you'd think but loads of power. Keeps up with the best of em. Thirsty cars when you keep the right foot down. Knock sensors give trouble, easily changed, cheap enough too. Vacuum pipes get clogged, very common, kills the power, can put car in limp mode, time consuming to get right again.

Go on to the above forum, its a great forum full of guys and girls that are mad about these cars... search for trouble code 66. Its known as the devils code when it comes to these cars...

I hope you know engines and aren't afraid to get hands dirty. Also get a dam good alarm and lock the thing down.
