    ford 4600 won't start

i think there is something sticking in the fuel pump
i took the head off and its not under there but deep inside

i read it somewhere before, the name of it,but can't remember

    what do i do now?

also does anyone recondition ford starters?

Is it the governor plate you are thinking of?

I am assuming it is a lucas pump when you have taken the head off it?

Are you sure it is getting diesel from the lift pump when the engine is turning?

it is a CAV pump i am talking about
i can get diesel into the pump and splling out of the bleed hole but only a drip from the injectors

i took the head off and stopper shaft and throttle spring are in place and working, the plate is moving, but i heard there was something inside the governor plate that sticks too.

    am i right?

Yeah that is the pump I am thinking of.

It sounds like it is the pump itself that is at fault. Best thing to do is whip it off and take it to a specialist and get it tested.

    wheres the fun in that?
it will have to be re timed when refitted ,ya?

i will approach head office and see what he says

It is probably on a key way so will be simple enough to refit.

Bit of tippex and mark its position on the slots to make life easier for yourself.

Rotary pumps only have the one pumping element so when it breaks you stop. If it was an inline pump you would only be down one cylinder

Don't mess with the diesel pumps, they are pretty specialist and need a testing rig to calibrate them. I was looking a diagram of them recently and they look utterly frightening.

Easy enough to take off on a 4600. Just loosen the three bolts, then take off the inspection plate at the other side of the timing gear assembly. You can then loosen the gear from the pump shaft. There is a marker on the shaft of the pump and a hole on the gear to assist with refitting I think.

The gear itself will stay where it is.

It is probably easier to take off the starter.

In what circumstances did the tractor stop?

    the tractor didnt actually stop

the filter needed changing and there were leaks from the stoppershaft and the throttle shaft

then when all was done and ready to fire..nothing

the owner said it happened before and they dragged it up and down the road and around the field and yanked the throttle down a few times and away it went

so something stupid must be sticking.

will try a tip of the sledge hammer, hee, hee

    okay

i spent today at that tractor and fuel pump

i took off the head of the pump again and the governor plate wasnt sticking.
i know i shouldnt have but i changed the spring setup for the governor to see would it make any difference and it didn't

i am resigned to the fact that it has beaten me and the pump has to come off and be sent to be redone...arse!

anyway, does anyone know where to send a ford tractor starter to be reconditioned in cork?
