how many hours/lessons would a competent 15yr old skier need to become a reasonable snowboarder ? She hopes to join her older siblings on snowboards in mid Dec 09 but has only skied up to now. As we dont live in or near Dublin she would have to do the full day course - the beginner and prob the adv beginner. Does anybody know if after these two courses she would be good enough to head off with more exp snowboarders who would be on the look out for her ?

    Thank you.

2 sets of 4 lessons would give her a good start into snowboarding in kilternan. The rest is up to practice. Thats what i found anyway

do you mean practise in Kilternan or when she gets to France ? We live 140 miles away from Kilternan unfortunately !

    Ive never been on dendex.
But at a guess 8 good sessions and lots of work could get you moving maybe a days course on actual slopes and you should be ready to rock...

Its a pretty easy sport once you get your mind around turning...

    Dobh:

The one day intesive sessions in Kilternan are equivelant to about 5 lessons up there.

So the two days should have here nearly up to snowboard instructor level:D:D:D:D. (Sorry Boarders to easy)

Just give the ski club a call and ask about boot sizes as if she has small feet they may not have them.

    Enjoy

That sounds like the business for her. Shoe size wont be a problem as she is tall and has " adult " size feet.

Thank you all for your great advice.

I'd be wary about Kilternan for snowboarding... I know a fair few people who've broken fingers, wrists and arms snowboarding there. If you do go, make sure she has proper wrist guards at least.
Possible alternative could be the ski place in sandyford. It's a big downhill treadmill basically but I'm not sure how it compares.

Hey - what about Ski Ireland in Sandyford - where the slope is actually a conveyor?
Since there are no holes there for fingers or thumbs - thought it would be safer?

Disclaimer - have not yet tried there but am planning to...

Snow-Monkey, Was only having a loving prod at my fellow snow users! Currently trying to learn the dark side of the sport,

dobh Yep both boarders and skiers suffer from Kilternan Thumb/Finger, sadly its the biggest draw back of dendix but not a life threatining injury

Ski place in sandyford is not bad couple of issues with it though (as I have with the dendix but diffrent ones)

    No sensation of movement

Converyor is not tha big but moves constantly so not like you need a huge slope

For skiing to get used to it they teach you to lift your ski which is a major no no for skiing and considered a bad habbit

But like I said they both options for learing to ski/ board in Ireland have their strengths and weaknesses guess its just a personal choice in the end
