Essential PS3 Games

With the number of 'Recommend Me a Game'-style threads that pop up regularly, I propose that we use this thread as a one-stop shop for all the essential games on the PS3.

The idea would be, everyone would contribute one game [or more if you feel like it] and explain why you believe this is a must-buy game for the PS3. Then, whoever agrees with you can thank the post and add creedance to your view.

BTW I did not come up with this idea. Apologies, but I can't remember who did. I read it on boards somewhere and thought it was a good idea.

    Can this be stickied?

This game is, by far, my favourite game on the PS3. Created by Naughty Dog, developers of Crash Bandicoot, the game is a third-person action/adventure title in the mould of Tomb Raider.

The game stars Nathan Drake, a descendant of Sir Francis Drake, the explorer, who is on a quest to find the lost city of El Dorado. Accompanying Drake is his friend, Sully and reporter Elena. The story follows the trio to a Pacific island where they meet others who want to find the city for other, more sinister reasons.

The voice acting and motion-capture performances in this game are fantastic. Nolan North has become a well-known name in the world of gaming because of his performance as Nathan Drake. He oozes charisma and has a quick wit, adding plenty of humour to proceedings.

The gameplay is also simple and well-executed. The balance between gunplay and exploration is handled well, with minor flaws that do not distract too much from the fun of the experience.

The soundtrack also needs mentioning as it is superb. The music was created by Greg Edmonson, the composer who worked on the Firefly TV series. He has a very distinctive sound that suits the game world well. The noise of the jungle environment is also implemented well, immersing the player into the game further.

Overall, though the game has flaws, the sheer fun and enjoyment gained outweighs any issues to make this an exceptional game. The lenght of the game is a issue, however I have replayed it a number of times and it is still a lot of fun. It is quite cheap to pick up and the sequel will be released soon so now is a perfect time to invest or replay the game.

    9/10

otacon firstly i would like to say uncharted FTW

my reccomendation is MGS 4 (metal gear solid 4)

despite the lenghty cut scenes, this game truly is one of the best games in existence, wether you like the metal gear series or not it HAS to be played, the amount of stuff you can only notice during your 2nd or 3rd play is incredible such as the first time i beat one the major bosses i didnt know
her weapons were able to be picked up and be used by me to hypnotise the enemy forces
the fact that you can beat the game game without ever actually killing anyone makes for a great challenge the story is probably the piece of story telling available on ANY console cant reccomend this enough

    Little Big Planet

What a great platform game. Just good fun to play (and one game the the GF will play with me). It looks unlike any other game, plays great, and actually has a lot to offer

Valkyria Chronicles is one of the main reasons that i bought a PS3. Superb game, with great gameplay, interesting characters, a fantastic soundtrack, and a surprisingly mature view of war. It's just a great story. Everyone should, at the very least, give it a go.

Demon's Souls is another great game. If you like hack and slash, and are sick of being treated like a retard when starting a game, then this is the one for you. Painfully hard at time, but damn rewarding to level up and finally beat that next tough enemy. Take that you giant shielded ****!

Dead Space is a great survival horror game. May not be an 'Essential' purchase, but if you like horror games in the Resident Evil vein, then you'll probably love this. Scared the bejesus out of me on several occasions.

Yeah I recommended we do this here, but I got the idea from this thread over in the TV forum:

Ok see this kind of thing will ruin it, it needs to be kept to 1 game per post. I might want to agree with Wipeout but not with Warhawk, so how do I thank this post? Will thanking it mean that I think all the games are good.

I think a new thread should be started mirroring the format from the thread over in the TV forum. Standardized posting format, and 1 game recommendation per post. No discussion in the thread either.

I think that's a good idea too, maybe you should start it seeing as you had the idea? I would like the standardised format to have a rule about post length - I think a couple of paragraphs would be better than one sentence reasons. Maybe include a link to the official trailer or website or something? If it's worth doing something it's worth doing well. :pac:

I was bored in work, so i created a post as recommended above. Pretty much copied humanji's tv thread as suggested by L31mr0d.

Let me know if there's anything i should add/remove/edit.

One thing, should the description of the game be an overview of the game itself, or an opinion based description? Or maybe both? Or should we just leave it as it is?

Maybe add an extra criteria to the OP called "Platform:" or "Type:" or something similar and have the options "Multi-format, PS Exclusive, PSN" so that people can distinguish if these games can be bought on an different platforms, downloaded from the Store, or are exclusive to only Playstations.

EDIT: Also, recommended in the TV show thread, it might be an idea to also have the criteria "You may like this is if you also liked...:" and then list games similar to it.

I'm stuck for what to recommend in the 'Like this? Then try this:' for LittleBigPlanet. Should I stick to the PS3? Or could I recommend New Super Mario Bros. Wii and LittleBigPlanet PSP? I can't really think of many games that are like LittleBigPlanet. If most people see LBP as a kiddies game, I figure I should just recommend Ratchet and Clank, or for the 'Play, Create, Share' concept, ModNation Racers and Kodu?

I like the idea of a mix of both as it means that it turns the description into more of a review. Anyone looking for recommendations can get an idea of what the game is like to play and what features they may like.

GothPunk - I think you should mention Ratchet and Clank and ModNAtion Racers. That way you cover both important aspects of the game. I think the game needs to be a PS game however, just because that's where we are. If this was on the Games forum, I would say different.

About the essential games thread, I don't think anyone's gaining very much information on a game in its current format.

IMO some personal opinion would add a lot more to it rather than just excerpts from other websites.

Otherwise there's nothing justifying the recommendation, it's only a description which isn't particularly useful. It'll just be a list of games and a short description, when it could be a lot more informative and personal with the addition of the poster's opinion.

    Just my two cents...

IMO some personal opinion would add a lot more to it rather than just excerpts from other websites.

It runs the risk of becoming bloated and also subjective.

For instance, someone might say recommend Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 and put as their personal opinion "awesome because when you shake the controller the characters boobs shake"... it's true, and it's a personal opinion, but I wouldn't thank that because it isn't a good review of the game.

People can still discuss the games themselves in other threads, the games review section is the place for personal opinions. The essential PS3 games thread is just to really catalogue the games that people have played here and how many people would recommend each of them.

    COD4

Good gameplay and if you have an internet connection, the game expands to really become something special

I dunno, I think a personal account can be a lot more informative and useful than a description that was just written from a marketing perspective. That way any flaws can be mentioned as well.

There is no harm in subjectivity really, as long as the reader realises that it's subjective.

Ok well I think the middle ground is this, add a link (bold or capitalize it if you want) to the thread on boards.ie that is discussing the game, or your review in the games reviews section. This way it keeps the individual posts succinct, but also allows for the user viewing the thread to know where to go in the forum to ask specific questions about it.

I've done this in my post today about flower.

I bought the game today and i would say...

    Amazing:

    - Gameplay
    - Visuals
    - Bosses
    - Boobies

Team Mission: Absolutely Challenging but fun! :D

This thread is pointless unless we discuss games instead of discussing how to write about games. Just write ONE game's name and your opinion of it. Thats it. Done.

In this thread, did everyone just copy/paste the description or are they written by the poster? I read a few that seem to be just copied. I'd rather read the user's own personal opinions for recommending a game to be honest...

It has been discussed earlier in this thread. TBH I don't see any issue with people using their own words, however, if you really want to write game reviews, why not use the forum: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=636. I use it every so often.

Also on that thread, (http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055704418) there are two entries for Demon's Souls. Page 1, http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=62444842&postcount=3 and page 3, http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=65316218&postcount=38

Would it be possible to get the second one deleted?

Don't know where else to put this, can put it in the thread in question.
