When I started in UCC in 2004, they were very fast. But they haven't been replaced, by and large, since then. They take ages to turn on all right. Bring your laptop in instead (if you have one!).

I restart them if they are taking ages to log in - a lot of the computers are left on for ages, and can make the computer slow as the day goes on. Especially in the evening they can be fairly slow!

    lol +1

To think I used be in awe of their speed compared to my laptop :pac:

Some of the ones in the Boole have 512mb RAM I think. The ones nearer to the door in the right hand side lab. That might just be hearsay tho'.

Haven't used a lot Of different computers yet but the ones in Q+3 are shocking :D

If you're the first person to use a competer on the day, then it's generally quite slow. You need to log out and log back in if you're finding it slow.

best computers are in the Connolly building - fastest ones I've used. The ones in the ORB were newer ones that were quite fast as well!

They are the only ones I get to use at the mo - not on the main campus at all this semester!

The ones in the BIS labs in the ORB are pretty good. Hardly ever a queue for them either, unless one of the classes that uses them has a project due.
Avoid the ones in the Boole as much as I can. Pretty useless really. I want to see what the labs in the WGB are like. Must be realtively new.

are those ones in the BIS lab open access??

Let me know how u get on with the ones in WGB, even though I'm down there, never have time to get on one of those computers.

Don't think any of the BIS ones are open access. Think there are a few open access labs on the top fllor of the ORB, but I'm not sure.
Don't ahave any reason to go to WGB though. I don't have anylectures or anyhing down there.

I dont think there are open access in WGB, anyone?

Willl someone post a screen shot of the CPU/RAM specs of the open acces labs?
ORB is gone, BIS and CS have their own labs. They are not public access.

    in WG, nope....

If i had to reply on slow ass computers like in the boole I would f>ck off with ucc and go elsewhere tbh

Yeah, a load of the open access computers are crap.. but I do wonder if it has more to do with the domain/logon server than the machines. The biggest delay for me is usually during the act of actually logging on.. once you are in and have IE open they are usually bearable. You are however in for a long wait if you open any sizeable program.. Think most of the machines in the boole are old P4's.. there are some better machines in the library but are usually occupied.. there's open access comp's on every floor of the library iirc..

those ones on top of the ORB are shut now - were a grand bank of computers actually.

Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure the ones in the WGB aren't open access

    They aren't.

The specs in the WGB vary depending on which "level" of lab you are in. The undergrad ones have Core 2 Duo processors and either 2 or 3GB RAM. I'm in a iMac lab this year to do my FYP and they are much quicker again.

But the créme de la créme of that building would be the Mac Pro labs on the 1st floor in which each machine has 8-cores of processing power and I believe 6-8GB RAM along with high-end graphics and sound cards and two 17" monitors per machine for dual-screen delight.

A very small percentage of students have access to the Mac pros though (me included :p). They arn't setup on the network yet though so havn't tested them out

Depending on the time of the day,The computers will be slower of quicker,Evening is probably the best time as there is very little network traffic(Very few people still in college/browsing the net) compared to lunch..

From what i've seen the pc needs to download the user data from the Servers in the boole basement to your pc.And the more people on the pc's the longer it will take to transfer it to you.. :) (I could be very wrong)

The one's in the WGB are super quick and although they aren't open access if you knock on the door you'll be let in :pac:

True but you wouldn't have a login to use any of those computers

actually, same specs as above :)

I imagine the multimedia machines have better graphics cards. I just wanted to sound superior :(

But you could change the network you log on to.

Isn't there like a helpdesk login account? But is that restricted?

The WGB really should have open access computers. Fecking computer scientists get all the good stuff. :(

You have a choice of logging into CS-Domain or MATSCI domain. So unless you're a CS or Maths student, forget about it
