    Hi all,

Can’t seem to find the forum search facility the last few days so will ask this anyway even though I think I remember seeing a thread on this some time ago. Are there any basic bike repair courses available, preferably in the midlands?

    Regards,
    d

Just things like recognising and taking small buckles out of wheels, adjusting/tightening gears. I suppose an opportunity to see/try out different groupsets, assembling a bike (if it came from planet X), diagnosing problems, changing parts, tires, tubes, chainsets, mixing parts etc etc etc, those sort of things so that I could do a lot more myself at home rather than running to the bike shop with the slightest little problem.

I'm fairly new to cycling but would just like to increase my general knowledge on the bike. I got a puncture the first week I had it and when i went back for my first month service they were laughing that i had it screwed on the wrong way!

This is a great place for the theory, but some basic course to put it into practice would be great. You know like u see all these private colleges offer courses like 'owning your own pet' or 'grow your own garden' or 'interior design' courses that are 3 months and advertised in most papers. Never see a 'bike repair/competancy course' anywhere. So just wondering is there anything out there that covers the basics?

You could just learn as you go. That is definitely the best way! A book like this might help you out. You can buy it in Halfords if you don't wanna shop on the web:

If getting a book I would recommend Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance- or Mountain Bike Maintenance if that is your thing. Very good and easy to follow.

Also good resources on the web:

    Specifically repair:

    www.parktool.com/repair/
    www.bicycletutor.com (great video tutorials)

    Generally about everything bike:

    www.sheldonbrown.com

All Shimano's technical documentation (which is actually pretty good):

    http://techdocs.shimano.com/

I posted this a while ago and enrolled. Classes never started though due to insufficient numbers signing up to make it happen.
