    Drill rounds are pretty obviously not live and live rounds are pretty obvious as well, very careless.

    Rule 1 - always point the gun in a safe direction
    (does not indicate you can do otherwise when unloaded, loaded with dummies, etc)

    The Mistake he made was to aim the gun at someone - end of story - if you never point a gun at someone you cannot shoot someone.

    If he had been pointing the gun in a nominated safe direction and it had gone off then he would look stupid/lose his job/face prosecution for discharging a firearm off a range/whatever but nobody would have been hurt.

    100% correct, the devil loads the empty gun. some our guys are not far behind these police either in elation to handling firearms.

    Agree, Garda firearms training has improved but a lot more work needs to be done.
