Im looking to change my car! I preferably want a diesel that is has MPG due to recently having to drive from Limerick to Cork everyday for work. I currently have a 02 BMW 318I SE. I want it to have a bit of power behind it and maybe go up a bit in years. Any suggestions would be grateful.
    Thanks.

Would an E90 320d make sense, from 2005 onwards the 320d has 163bhp but from late 2007 with Efficent Dynamics fitted it was bumped up to 177bhp.

If you want a change from BMW then maybe a Saab 9-3 1.9 TiD which comes in 120bhp or 150bhp. Not as nice to drive as a BMW though.

Another one would be the Alfa Romeo 159 1.9 JTDM, same Fiat diesel engines as the Saab above.

The only other one I can think of is the Skoda Octavia vRS diesel which has the VAG 2.0 TDi with 170bhp. If you are doing a bit of driving then I would recommend trying to find one with the DSG gear box.

Hi, It really depends what is important to you - looks, performance, economy, residuals, value for money, practicality ?

I would stick with a BM or an Audi and go for a diesel and you will get the best combination of everything ...

I wouldnt go for an alpha simply cos i dont like the look of them. i know its a stupid reason not to like them but i just dont.
The skoda is a bit of a family car which isnt my thing!! but i just read a bit about it and seems impressive.
I have looked into a 320 and that is top of my list. My last car was a BMW aswel so a change might be good.
Im also looking into the saab.
    Good suggestions thanks.

Could always go for the 2007 => VW Golf 1.4 GT
it has economy with the 1.4 and the turbo and superchager giving you up to 170Bhp when you need it, nice car good year and great engine now at a reasonable price!

I do like a car that looks well, i also want a car that will do more than 32MPG.
I drove a new Kia pro'ceed, lovely looking car but the inside had really cheap plastic that sounded hollow to tap, no power, looked like half the engine was missing from the inside. . . the list goes on. . . .
Regarding how much im willing to pay depends on if i buy in this counrty or the uk. if im to buy a car no more than 2-3 years old i can afford to spend 20k and hope to add a few more thousand with the sale of my own car.
But i dont mind buying an older car and saving a bit to put nice wheels and do it up a bit with out adding a boy racer look to it, if you know what i mean!

Thanks Hick, Thats just been added to the list, which is in no order:

    BMW 320D
    Saab 9-3
    VW Golf GT
    Honda Accord 2.2L
Opel Astra OPC (petrol) not overly gone on the interior.

Seeing as the Honda Accord is on your list you should look at prices in the UK. For the spec and the quality of the car, you should be able to bring in a 08 with the lower road tax (think €302 a year) for your budget.

Somebody on here has a Golf GT 170, Nismo I think, and the turbo blew on it, might be just something to keep in mind.

The OPC is really a far cry from the others. A good bit thirstier, but would blow the others into the weeds really. If you're considering that then there's a few more for the list.
How much do you think you'll get for the 318?

The astra OPC is a bloody fine car, but it struggle to beat the mpg of your current car. As mentioned above if your considering one of those then you should also be looking at golf GTI (not a GT), Mazda 3 MPS, Focus ST, Civic Type R etc etc etc. They are all the same groups of cars.

The BMW and Saab are a totally different kettle of fish.

Get a 08 MINI Clubman Diesel if it's in your budget. Road tax is 104 Euro, they're 110Bhp which can be mapped to 150Bhp, but have the same torque as the Cooper S Turbo Petrol. Not only that, but you will get around 70mpg+ (I've gotten 85 out of one).

Im hoping to get 6k for my car which i think is being realistic:)

I know the astra doent fit into my list as wanting an econmical diesel sensible enough car but i do like them all the same and thats why thats on my list.

Your car should sell fairly quickly for that price, well, depending on the mileage?

How much are you looking to spend?
