Sticky Cruise Control on E46 318

I've already posted this on BMW Driver - but I thought that I'd post it here as well, so as to cast my net a little wider.

I've recently encountered a bit of a problem with the cruise control on my E46 2000 318i.

Cruise control works a treat when engaged, but let's say that I have to brake for some reason. When I try to put pressure back on the accelerator, I'm sometimes met with resistance, to the point where I have to stomp on the accelerator to get going again.

Recently while stopped at lights, I couldn't take off, as I just couldn't move the accelerator. It finally released, and I took off in a cloud, embarrassed as hell.

At this point I'm not using cruise control at all, as I don't want a repeat.

Anyone got any suggestions or tips?

I'd have to suspect that your problem with the accellerator is not related to the cruise control.

I may be wrong, but I understood that the E46 had an electronic (fly by wire) accelerator control.

Have you checked the obvious, like are the mats or some other object obstructing the pedal movement?

I don't have mats (:0) so there is no obstruction under the pedal. Additionally, this only happens when under cruise control, otherwise the accelerator moves freely.

Someone has already suggested to me that the cable itself is fleadhed - or there is a damaged/dirty connector. I'll have to get it up on my father's lift to look easily.

A 2000 car won't have fly by wire.
