They are not essential if you have a good diet with plenty of fresh veg and oily fish, but I reckon they are no harm as a bit of insurance. I take a multi-vit, a fish oil and a cal/mag every day.

I thought calcium inhibited magnesium absorption?

Are you thinking of ZMA? As far as I know, calcium and magnesium work very well together to keep your bones strong.

I take ZMA at night alright. The instructions are very specific: Not to have any calcium before taking it. I think calcium and magnesium at the same time means there's competition for magnesium absorption. That's my (limited) understanding anyway.

My understanding is that in ZMA, the magnesium is used by the muscles. If you take magnesium and calcium together, they are more likely to go to the bones.

I think the thing about cal mag competing for absoption is only if you don't take a chelated magnesium supplement that allows the magnesium to be absorbed by a different metabolic pathway. Always take mag suppplements that are magnesium aspartate or citrate, the most absorbable form is magnesium chelated with amino acids, but it's the most expensive. I take citrate myself.

Back on topic, I think a good fish oil supplement is essential for most of us as it helps maintain a healthy omega 6:3 ratio in our diets that prevents inflammation and all the health problems that go along with it. I eat a lot of sardines and flaxseed but still feel the difference of a good quality fish oil supp to my general well being.

Is there a particular fish oil brand that recommended/you guys find good? I don't know about anyone else but i tend to get overwhelmed when i go looking for suppliments and its very tempting to buy the '3 for 2' own brand in Boots but i know its probably a false economy so if someone could recommend one that works well for them i'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance.;)

You need to check out the amount of EPA and DHA, these are the long chain fatty acids that actually provide the health benefits.

A decent amount would be 600-1000mg EPA + DHA combined. Any oil worth it's salt will have this info on the back.

Then you can get into variances in purity which is harder to quantify. If it says 'Pharmaceutical grade' then that's pretty much the best you can buy.
