VAG 1.9TDI Clutch Issues

    Hi
    I drive a 2006 SEAT Alhambra 1.9TDI
Does anybody know of a batch of faulty clutches or DMF's that were fitted to VAG 1.9 Tdi engines around 2006/2007

I've had a DMF fail at 17000 kilometres which necessiated a DMF & Clutch kit replacement (thankfully under warrenty).

Now, 2 years later and a total of 47000 kilometres on the clock, the car has to have another new clutch and DMF fitted. This time, I'm told that the clutch has worn and the DMF has suffered severe heat damage??? This time it will cost me lots!

The parts in question were manufactured by SACHs - a search on the web reveals that VW in the US issued a service bulletin covering the replacement of SACH clutchs manufactured in 06/07 as they were faulty and prone to early wear.

Anybody know of similar issues this side of the world?

    Thanks

How much are Seat quoting you for the job?

Get it done here for around the €550 mark.

Well they are going in alot of cars nowaday usually from 60k miles onwards. Yours does seem to be lasting an especially short time but if it is a fact that the clutch is completely worn after only 30,000 km, well they might well claim that there is a certain amount of driver abuse involved as to wear out a clutch in 30k km is usual also. They are possibly bluffing in relation to the clutch being worn though to weaken your case

have they opened it yet ???

you wont know the condition of DMF until its opened ...

very strange/unlucky to have another one fail ... sachs is an excellent brand used OE in a large number of manufacturers.

IMO the sooner someone designs a Single Mass Conversion Kit for VAG 1.9TDi the better.

if its not in warranty dont let the dealer near it .... will cost way too much there..

have herd roumers of VW dealers not replacing either clutch or DMF if they dont look worn when done under warranty meaning often the Clutch/DMF gives trouble sooner than it should further down the line when car is out of Warranty.

the brand im most familer with is LUK similar in rep to Sachs and they recommend changing DMF if it has 10mm play this means if it has 9mm then tecnially dealer doesnt have to change ... personally any play and i would change.

Main Stealer wanted minimum spend of €1100 to replace clutch only. If DMF needed changing then cost would go up.
Next closest Stealer wanted €830 for clutch replacement only.
My local independant quoted €540 for clutch replacement.
    Guess who I went for?

However, when he took off the clutch he noticed heat cracks on the flywheel which means that that has to be replaced as well.

My concern is that, if there is a known issue with Sach clutches of this vintage, why do I have to shell out full whack to fix a known problem?

SEAT don't know or don't want to know about this problem as it is a VAG engine. Anyone know who to contact in VAG to see if these parts were indeed faulty?

I installed a Metal flywheel in my passat this year. DMF had smashed a nice hole in side of gearbox. Luckily got a gearbox from Traynors and went for the LUK Metal Flywheel. Its like a different car. No more stalling at low revs. Would recommend a conversion to metal flywheel. You won't have to worry about it again. I heard Mr Clutch/Gearbox will only fit metal flywheel now on VAG's. They won't stand over DMF replacements

LuK now have a range of solid-flywheel conversion for a variety of DMF's.

Take a look at my gearbox. I didn't need CSI to tell me what was wrong.

also footage from my car showing problems with gearbox. Happened all of a sudden (the gearbox that is). But I reckon I could have been driving on a dodgy DMF for 20k. It never collapsed the way it should have when it failed.
