I'd switch over myself if every single website I've ever signed up to isn't using my primary address. Can you switch the gmail and keep your same email (kinda like switching mobile phone numbers?)

Would be nice if Microsoft emailed all those whose address's were revealed on the list...but of course it's Microsoft we're talking about.

There was an update for messenger with "critical security updates" a few days ago...probably something to do with that.

Yes. Why not? It's just another web-mail account. It pretty much does what you would expect.

Apart from gmail being POP3 based which might be useful for certain tasks, I don't see the attraction. Does gmail not have a reading pane? I couldn't find a setting to turn it on anyway.

Yahoo mail is pretty slick these days with it's tabbed interface. Very fast displaying of email content too.

When gmail first came out the others were badly lagging in terms of ability and disk space, but these days they are all pretty much on par.

    For me it goes
    1. Yahoo
    2. Hotmail
    3. Gmail

Yes, in a Gmail account you have the following options: Settings > Accounts and Import.

    Import mail and contacts:
Import from Yahoo!, Hotmail, AOL or other webmail or POP3 accounts.

    ---

Check mail using POP3: Get your mail from other accounts in Gmail using POP3.

..assuming you have an account that has POP3 access.

basically, if you were stupid enough to log in to one of those sites that says will check whos blocked you on MSN, they have your password and spammed all your mates from it, and now have your stupid mate's passwords too.

here's a thought, don't be so worried about who might have blocked you, how low is your self-esteem to check?! and don't give your passwords to dodgy french sites you've never been on before.

Gmail has free end to end encryption- will this protect my password from being stolen?

I think all webmail accounts use SSL for log in, so your password is not transmitted in plain text.

The main way people will get your password is if they figure it out because it's simple, or if they "phish" it off of you. Key-loggers would be less common because they will be picked up by anti-virus or anti-spyware software.

The only place you should enter your user name and password is the log in page, or the change password page of your email provider. Be suspicious of any where else.

Any chance we can get a poll on what email provider people use?

Some Gmail accounts compromised too - Link
    Google targeted in e-mail scam
    By Jonathan Fildes
    Technology reporter, BBC News

Google has confirmed to BBC News that its e-mail system - Gmail - has been targeted as part of an "industry-wide phishing scheme".

The search giant said that it had taken immediate action to safeguard the affected accounts.

Phishing involves using fake websites to lure people into revealing data such as bank account details or login names.

BBC News has seen two lists that detail more than 30,000 names and passwords that have been posted online.

"We recently became aware of an industry-wide phishing scheme through which hackers gained user credentials for web-based mail accounts including Gmail accounts," said a Google spokesperson.

"As soon as we learned of the attack, we forced password resets on the affected accounts. We will continue to force password resets on additional accounts when we become aware of them."

The firm stressed that the scam was "not a breach of Gmail security" but rather "a scam to get users to give away their personal information to hackers".

    'Industry problem'

The phishing scam was originally thought to target just Hotmail users.

It was brought to light when 10,000 Hotmail addresses were posted online at Pastebin, a website commonly used by developers to share code.
“ I'd... recommend that people change the password on any other site where they use it ”
    Graham Cluley Security consultant

The list was reported by technology blog Neowin.

However, a second list of 20,000 names has since emerged containing e-mail addresses and passwords from Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, Gmail and other service providers.

Some of the accounts appear to be old, unused or fake. However, BBC News confirmed that many - including Gmail and Hotmail addresses - were genuine.

Other addresses include Comcast and Earthlink accounts.

It is not clear whether the new list was part of the same phishing attack that collected the Hotmail addresses or a separate scam.

A spokesperson for Microsoft said phishing was an "industry-wide problem".

"Our guidance to customers is to exercise extreme caution when opening unsolicited attachments and links from both known and unknown sources, and that they install and regularly update their anti-virus software."

Both lists have since been removed.

However, security expert Graham Cluley of Sophos advised users to change their passwords as soon as possible.

"I'd also recommend that people change the password on any other site where they use it," he said.

About 40% of people had the same password for every website they used, he added.

I've been using hotmail since before gmail was around. And I have my email address entered into countless amounts of websites and forums. It wouldn't be practical to switch to gmail or yahoo. As well as that, I'd still need it for Windows Live Messenger anyway.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 133 ✭✭This_Years_Love

I don't know about Hotmail. But Yahoo is even more fecked up. I keep trying to sign into my email address which is myfirstname.mylastname@yahoo.ie with my password and it keeps logging me on to myfirstnamemylastname@yahoo.ie (without the dot) which is someone else email account. This girl as obviously got the same name as me. I noticed an email from one of my mates which was meant for me and was accidently sent to her by mistake so I looked through her emails and I found a link to her facebook. She's a redhead from Cork. I wonder if Yahoo keeps logging her onto my account and she's looking through my emails too.
