Be careful switching HD resolution with UPC

My TV & AV receiver both claim to support 1080i, so over the weekend I tried switching the UPC box resolution from 720p to 1080i to see if there's a difference. Big mistake.

The screen just went black, with very brief flashes every 10 seconds or so. With most such resolution switches, there's a timer which will return to the previous resolution if you don't confirm. There isn't any with UPC - or at least none that I could see! :)

Turning the cable box off and on again didn't help. Eventually I got it back by guessing the number of "Rights", "Downs", and "OKs" required to change the resolution back to 720p. Thank God, didn't fancy getting an engineer out to fix that!

Incidentally, "Auto" resolution doesn't work either. It was fine for SD channels, but when I switched to a HD channel the picture went again; and didn't return when I switched to SD.

Does the HD box not have analogue SD outputs? Could have used them to see if it does.

Good idea, didn't think of that. (Didn't have any Scart cable on hand in any case). I've no idea if that would have worked better than the HDMI route.

Scart would've worked fine, albeit in SD

Happened to me too, going through receiver (Sony) with HD box set to 1080i resulted in a black with intermittent flashing screen. Plugging the HDMI straight into the TV (Panny) from the HD box got me a proper picture back, set it back to 720p. Receiver handles 1080p from my PS3 so not sure 1080i is not working from the UPC box.

It seems to be a common problem, when going through a receiver or such device. Works perfectly fine direct to TV though.

My receiver will do up to 1080p, my TV will only do 1080i, and I set the UPC box to 1080i.

Sometimes I can get it to work via HDMI, but more often than not, I have to use scart for the picture through my receiver.

Even setting it to 720p doesn't always work for me.

I can change the settings on the receiver to pass-through or set. So, either the receiver just passes through the signal and uses what is set by the TV (1080i) or it takes in the signal and upscales to 1080i.

    It's very frustrating.
