Lyndhurst 'to play Rodney Trotter's dad'

Nicholas Lyndhurst will play Rodney Trotter's presumed biological father Freddie 'The Frog' Robdal in the upcoming prequel to Only Fools and Horses.

The actor, who played Rodney himself in the long-running sitcom, will be joined by Inbetweeners star James Buckley, who will play the young Derek Trotter in Sex, Drugs & Rock 'n' Chips.

John Sullivan said: "Nick Lyndhurst is a comedy genius and I can't think of anyone better suited to bring the shady but charming Freddie Robdal to life.

"James Buckley has a tough act to follow but is sure to do for leather bomber jackets and winkle-pickers what David Jason did for camel-haired coats and cocktail umbrellas!"

Other stars cast in the 90-minute special include Kellie Bright as Derek and Rodney's mother Joan and Phil Daniels as their grandfather Ted.

The prequel will concern the release of Robdal from prison, which will "ruffle some feathers in the Trotter household".

The one-off episode will also feature teenage versions of characters Boycie, Trigger and Denzil.

A really off the wall but interesting decision, I'm guessing that he'll obviously look like Rodders, but will have the attitude and traits of Del Boy.

In theory having actors play younger versions of Boycie, Trigger and Denzil could be great, but they will have to get mannerisms down perfectly.

    Looking forward to this!

Sounds interesting all right but considering the source materials popularity and cult status it will need to be amazing not to piss off the fans. I see huge potential for epic fail.

If the last few xmas specials are anything to go by it will be awful. They had the perfect ending when they became millionaires but went away and ruined it with unnecessary specials. Those in the BBC seem determined to ruin the legacy of a comedy classic.

The fella from the inbetweeners they picked is a perfect fit imo, and I think since John Sullivan is writing it it definitely has potential.

Nick in Fools And Horses prequel

Mon 05 Oct 1:59 PM. By Press Association

Nicholas Lyndhurst is to play Rodney's father in a prequel to Only Fools And Horses. The 47-year-old actor will play "art connoisseur" Freddie "The Frog" Robdal in the BBC One spin-off, working title Sex, Drugs And Rock 'n' Chips - who is the biological father of Rodney Trotter, the character which made his name in the hit comedy.
The Inbetweeners star James Buckley will play the teenage Del Boy Trotter, while Bad Girls' Kellie Bright will play Del Boy's glamorous mother Joan Trotter and Soldier Soldier's Shaun Dingwall will play her husband Reg Trotter.
Phil Daniels plays Del's granddad, Ted Trotter and The Royal's Robert Dawes will play Joan's boss, the sleezy Mr Raynor.
Writer John Sullivan says: "Sex, Drugs And Rock 'n' Chips hurtles us into the rough and unglamorous world of London in 1960 to discover the circumstances that led to Del and Rodney Trotter turning out the way they did.
"Nick Lyndhurst is a comedy genius and I can't think of anyone better suited to bring the shady but charming Freddie Robdal to life, and James Buckley has a tough act to follow but is sure to do for leather bomber jackets and winkle-pickers what David Jason did for camel-haired coats and cocktail umbrellas!"
The series will see Joan not-so-happily married and living in Peckham with bone-idle Reg and her teenage son, Derek, when Freddie "The Frog" Robdal is released from prison and comes back into their lives.
Shooting begins in London from Monday October 5.
The comedy drama will also feature the teenage versions of Only Fools And Horses favourite characters Boycie, Trigger, Denzil and Roy Slater.

Should be interesting to say the least!

Actually Freddie Robdal is just Rodney's father and not Del Boy's. And in pictures of him in the past he has looked exactly like Rodney as the just dressed up Nick Lyndhurst in sixties gear. So I doubt he will have Del Boy's mannerisms.

I give this a very cautious welcome. Good choice getting Jay from the Inbetweeners to play Del Boy though.

Have to agree here as the Christmas specials were ****e of the highest order. Classic old comedy shows should be left alone really as what's next, Fawlty Towers the next generation :(
