New Irons

Right, I've come into a small bit of cash and decided to spoil myself with some new equipment.
Thinking of going with the Cobra S9s. I swung a few clubs in the shop last Saturday and took a liking to the Ping G15s and the Cobra S9s. I have faced reality in the fact that although I am a good ball striker, I am a long way off been good enough to not require game improvement irons

I borrowed a 6i S9 and a 7i G15 for my round on Sunday. I went out of my way to make sure I was in the 6/7 range for a lot of my 2nd shots.... and was using them even when I was in 5/8 range. I hit both about 4/5 times on the course.... and I absolutely loved each of them to be honest. Still not sure which I prefer.

I think I actually prefer the aesthetics of the G15, which surprised me. I am siding with the S9s only because they are easier to get online, and therefore easier to get at a relatively cheap price. Ping make it so awkward to buy their equipment*.
I can get a set of S9s (2008 model) < €350. In fact, with one company they throw in a S9 lob wedge as well, although I have little interest in that.

I reckon I will go with golfstoreeurope as they have the option to get 4-pw instead of 5-sw. I prefer to use my own wedges.

Something I have heard about the S9s is that the lofts are different... i.e. that the PW is 44 rather than the usual 48. Is this correct? If it is, the 5-SW would probably suit better.
I can't find it online, and there is nothing on S9s on the cobra site.... have they stopped making them? I read somewhere that S2s were a replacement, but they seem to be designed for the lower handicapper.

I am getting a lesson later on, so will ask him about the clubs as well.

*If someone knows a good place to buy Ping clubs online, please let me know. They don't seem to stock it anywhere. I understand Ping dont allow it for some reason.
Also, I could go for the G10 irons, which obviously should be cheaper. But the best price I could get locally was €465. That's 100+ more than the S9s online.

€489 for G15's at Halfpenny golf.

loads of the UK retailers have G15's, simply do a google.co.uk search for them. also use the google 'shopping' bvutton on the top menu bar.

I tried out a few clubs, preferred the Burner 09 & G15 best.

Purchased the Burner 09 irons, after getting €100 trade in on old (Crap) clubs, also free fitting, so all in €450/.

not sure if that offer still available.

would do a ring around of your local golf club pro shops, as I've seen better deals at those shops than at Halfpenny / McGuirks etc.

Cheers for the info brian. I did a google.co.uk search earlier and couldn't find much (note: i was looking for g10 irons at the time). I thought I came across a statement somewhere saying that Ping don't allow Ping clubs to be ordered over the internet. None of websites I usually visit, like golfstoreeurope.com, onlinegolf.co.uk or golfonline.co.uk stock ping clubs.

Asked my pro about them a while ago, he advised me to look at a few more as well. He doesn't think much of the G15s and thinks the S9s might be a bit too game improvement for me, although he was still recommending them as a great club. And to be honest, I would probably be changing again in a year or two anyway, so they're still my no1 choice at the moment.

I haven't hit the burner irons at all, but I've read great things about them while doing some research today. Might try and borrow one from the store during the week.

Thanks for the advice btw, appreciated.

I just read you post about Ping irons etc. You can buy Pings in excellent condition (2nd hand) from a lot of internet sites. I had graphite Callaway 2002 irons (still have) but last year I bought a set of Ping ISI K steel shafted irons on ebay and it was the best thing I did, golfwise, for a long time. Superb clubs. Great feel and one of the biggest heads ever produced by Ping. And yet, they have a slim appearance from above, unlike the chunky Callaways.

how about getting your irons measured to fit?
i see you are going to a pro anyway, maybe a bit of analysing there and then, and he can point you in the right direction.

thats my plan, research a lot of irons, and see which ones i can take for a test drive, then have a pro centre fit them to my swing type and build.

I recently won a set of S9s and I have to say that they are SAVAGE! I can not recommend them enough, I had a set of cleaveland CG golds and have no complaints about them either. I have gained at least a club and a half with the S9s (full PW now average 145yds) and they are so easy to hit that they're after making the game a lot easier.

Like the previous comment - get yourself fitted, you'll be so thankful afterwards!!!

Well, I got my swing analysed the last time I was at a lesson. He has all the stats and the videos etc.... Anyone know if he can do the fitting from that?

EDIT: btw, my brother in law is a pro, he is very similar build and size to me. He told me years ago that I was standard everything and not to worry about it. My swing has changed a lot though, so might be interesting to find out more. Never really looked into the lie etc.

I have a lesson on Saturday, but it's on short game (chipping/pitching) and don't want to impede it.
It's also the last of my 3 for €100 lessons. I will probably get more, but only after a while.

But you haven't really. A PW is now a 9i. i.e. in my set of irons my PW has a loft of 48°. In the S9 it is 44°. Obviously this is going to get you more distance. I guess the thing is that it still goes very high?

Cheers, good site, although still pretty expensive for the iron sets.

Got a set of S9s in the past year and would also say that I love them (am off a hcp of 16), I agree was getting a good 10-15yds extra on my irons (obviously the difference in loft playing a part in this), but as you also get a good bit extra height I have found I have been hitting far more greens since changing.
I also find them very forgiving as you would expect from game improver irons and has saved me a good few shots on my rounds. I got the set 4-SW with GW included.
    Would definitely recommend them

    Cheers.

I sent an email to golfstoreeurope.com and they will give me 5 - GW, which I think will suit me perfectly. I rarely use my 4 iron anyway.

Now just to figure out about all the different options they offer

Jesus... this golf thing is costing me a fortune...just had a think about it.

    Already Purchased:

    Bag/Trolley/other accessories: €200
Massive box of top end Lakeballs: €150

    Sabertooth putter last month: €130

    CG12 RTG DSG GW: €100

G10 21 Deg rescue club: €130 (had won €50 voucher towards that though)

Titleist 909D2 Driver a few weeks ago: €230

    To be purchased:

    S9 5-GW irons: €340

    CG12 RTG DSG 56 & 60 Deg: €140

New 3 wood or lower degree Rescue club.... to be decided.

WOW, had no idea I had spent so much money already.
Well, once I have my irons and complete my wedge set, that will be it for major buys. My bag will be complete..... at least till next year

Than think about the money spent on membership, green fees and (which has killed me this year) open day fees, normally a little cheaper than the general green fee but they still set you back a good bit when you add them all up!

On second thoughts dont think about it!!!

Well, just put in the order for the S9s there. Hopefully have them by the end of the week, but might be next week due to the custom fitting changes.
Excellent price on them from golfstoreeurope.com and they were very helpful with different options etc.

And they just arrived :D. Pretty happy with the speed of delivery too as I made custom fit changes on the order.
Can't wait to hit the driving range.

Thats unreal. It's actually a 9 iron so with PW written on the sole. I have to assume that the rest of the set are lofted accordingly and therefore a 3 iron in that set is effectively a 2 iron. It's hard enough to hit a 3 iron without making it into a 2 iron! You'll end up with a huge gap then between your PW and gap wedge and may end up having to carry 4 wedges...... your 44 deg, a 48 deg, a 52 deg and a 56 deg.......

Well, the thing is that they were able to put the higher lofts because they are so easy to hit. And because they get the high trajectory.

I got the 5i to GW option. I dont need an iron any longer than the 5 (that has the loft of a 4). And the GW is 49 deg. I then have my set of wedges. 52/56/60 Cleveland CG12 wedges. Suits me perfectly actually.

Went to the driving range this evening. I wasn't hitting them all that well but that's because I have changed my swing and haven't quite found the rhythm yet.
They were incredibly forgiving though. Even when you don't quite connect, they still try their utmost to go towards the target.

They do also retain a very nice feel to the sweet hits too. Not too much feedback on the bad shots though...well not as much as my old clubs anyway.

The loft on the irons 3 to 8 iron are not that different from say Taylormade Tour Burner irons.
For some reason there is a max 1deg diff in all clubs apart from the PW which is 2deg.
I have the S9 and the extra height you get from these clubs gets around the loft difference, the only thing that took a little while was getting the distance right, but I guess that would be the same whatever new set you picked up

And so to Jimbling enjoy your clubs I love mine, but make sure you get plenty of practice from 150yds and closer to make sure you dont end up 10 yards over the back :D

Taylormade have said that they built these clubs and they go farther than any iron ever before blah blah blah. It's easy to see why now. They have made a 6 iron into a 5 iron and so on. It's all good if you like them though, no matter how far they travel!! At the end of the day it doesn't matter what you hit as long as it gets there.
