removing spots from ceiling

Has anyone any idea as to what would remove small marks from the ceiling. I tried a damp cloth but it won't remove them and i am wary of using anything that might fade the spots and leave white spots. I thought about a tiny amount of washing machine tablet on a damp cloth but not sure if it would fade the spots.

It occured to me I might touch up with a small sample paint applicator. Is there any standard white for a house ceiling the way magnolia is a standard wall colour

In general , ceilings are painted with a low grade matt emulsion. These are not scrubable or washable. Get yourself some matt ceiling paint from a diy store and it might touch up if the ceiling is not long painted. You might get a 'flashing' effect where you will see it being a brighter finish

Is there any special white or is there only one colour of matt ceiling paint

Matt white paint (or ceiling paint, which is thicker and doesn't spatter as much) is what you want. It will look whiter than the rest of the ceiling so you really should paint the whole ceiling.
You generally can't buy samples of white because....it's white!

What you need is Brilliant White Matt emulsion. Dulux do a 'ceiling paint' that would suit but it is not totally necessary.
As said , you may have to paint the whole ceiling

You could try some sugar soap on the marks.

There's only one colour of brilliant white but the perceived shades will differ from brand to brand, through different levels of filler/pigment being used, different sheen levels or the vehicle the paint uses...as murdec pointed out, touch ups may flash depending on how long the last coat's been on, but ultimately they will flash because there's a good chance the type of paint you use will differ slightly from what was originally used.
[edit] BTW magnolia isn't standard either from brand to brand (although the differences are very slight)

The sugar soap is what I'd try first...don't scrub at it though or you'll just leave a mark on the paint; vinyl matt is soft and chalky, and doesn't take abuse. If that doesn't work, try the touch up, but be prepared to coat the whole ceiling if you're the fussy type.
