The dole confuses me...

    Just making sure.

I am 18, currently in full time education (college, 19 hours per week) so would that classify me as unavailable to work? Like it wouldn't an evening job?

Anyway I just to make sure that I'm not entitled to anything. I can't sign on the dole cause I'm in education, I can't get a grant because my dad earns too much and I can't get a job cos there is none around for the hours I'm available.

    Right?

    Right.

    /thread.

Nah, you're probably going to have to apply for a loan if you can't cover costs on your own.

if college is 19 hours a week well then its not full time is it?

That's what I was thinking, like that is the full amount of hours I have. What classifies full time education?

If that was the case, most of us would be on the dole and getting grants. Full time education is something like a full-time degree or whatever. You might have 19 contact hours, but you're supposed to be independently working the rest of the time.

    But it's not a degree course, it's a fetac award I'm doing.

If it's full-time in description, you can't claim benefits as far as I'm aware (I don't know what the story is with part-time). The same way you can't claim dole when you're 18 and in secondary school.

I'm back in college now and I'm doing 24hrs per week and its classed as full time course also need to do around 10hrs research and assignments and projects to just get a basic pass grade. I could have done it part time 4 -6 hrs per week but it would take twice as long to do for exactly the same degree.

Next year in my final year it will be just 20hrs per week in college but we need to put in at least 15hrs on our own time outside for research on a year long project or there is not a hope of passing. This is for a level 7 award.

Part time college courses are less than 8-10hrs per week.

There are not many degree courses full time at 40 hours per week, I have done two but they are rare enough.
