I think this is very relevant to lots of people so hopefully you'll have some good suggestions.

I'm about to enter a very difficult project with work. It will involve working about 80 hours a week (including weekends) for about a month. It has a very strict deadline that I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT miss. The work itself isn't very physical but quite taxing on the brain, with a lot of reading, writing, prepartion of data and diagrams etc. I'm left entirely on my own devices for ths work and therefore have to be self-motivated.

My question is: How do I maintain I a high standard of productivity during this period while maintaining a good physical and mental health?

In the past, I've always been poor at these projects for a number of reasons, such as...
    - Starting with great gusto but fizzling out very early
    - Being "too kind" to myself and allowing too many breaks and nights off.
    - Not having proper time to eat properly and ending up starving or eating junk food.
    - Being too complacent about the deadline and expecting things to be ok if I miss it.
    - Getting lonely from the work and then distracting myself with chatting to friends on the internet or wasting time on facebook.
    - Feeling sorry for myself and losing a lot of productivity due to just moping about or doing this really slowly.

Suggestions? I'd love to be one of those new york stockbroker types that can work a 12 hour day, every day for years and just accept it like the norm. Would love to condition my brain to accept this work ethic (even if only for a short time).

Might be an obvious answer, but anyway, if it was me in your situation:

Lots of Excercise, 8+ hours sleep a night, rigourous timetabling with time off allocated to relax / unwind / meet your mates or loved ones.

Drink plenty of water and eat lots of fruit, avoid stoggy fatty foods, avoid alcohol to 'unwind' (this has longer term effects on your performance) ENTIRELY. Consider buying a vitamin supplement.

Shower and shave regularly (good for the mental well being I think).

Realise that your large goal is really just a set of smaller goals. Define them clearly as well as what you need to achieve to realise them, and work towards achieving the desired outcome in accordance with your timetable.

    So, to summarise:
    Define goals
    Have a strict timetable
Look after yourself and get rest and time off
