Hi, one of my childhood friends said she went from being a jehovahs witness to a christian, when i asked her why she told me that they were a cult started in the 1850's by an american man and she couldnt do anything. Could anyone shed some more light on this religion and in what way it differs from christianity??

    Thanks in advance

    A few differences:

    1. Christians believe Jesus is God. JWs believe He was a created being.
    2. Christians believe that salvation is by faith in Christ. JWs believe that only applied to the first 144,000 of their number. Since those slots are all filled, the best available to anyone now is to earn the right to live for ever on earth.
    3. Christians believe the Holy Spirit is a Person. JWs believe it is an impersonal force like gravity or electricity.
    4. Most Christians see other denominations as being valid expressions of Christianity. JWs insist they are the only true church and all other churches are false.
    5. Christians believe Jesus is returning some time in the future. JWs believe Jesus returned secretly in 1914.
    6. Christians believe Jesus rose bodily from the dead. JWs believe the resurrection was merely spiritual, not physical.

Yeah, thats pretty much on the money.

They believe Salvation to come in the form of 'The heavenly hope' and 'the earthly hope'. I.E. Some are selected to governance in heaven (144,000), while others live forever on a paradise earth. All have gained salvation though in their eyes they just recieve different roles.

    3. Christians believe the Holy Spirit is a Person. JWs believe it is an impersonal force like gravity or electricity.
The lingo they would use is, 'Gods active force'. I.E. His power.
    4. Most Christians see other denominations as being valid expressions of Christianity. JWs insist they are the only true church and all other churches are false.

Just ask them to go into how they come up with that date if you fancy having your head melt!

They are a cult that thrive on misinformation about them. Once someone throws some points at them that are actually not quite true, they respond something like, 'Yeah, there's alot of stuff people say about us.' They love the persecution complex. 'Its Satan working against us' or 'apostates spreading lies' yadda yadda. TBH, there seems to be reciprocal disdain for Born Agains. So In bold I've given a bit more clarity as to how A JW would present the points you made.

    A few more points.
They believe their 'Society' (Their term for their governing body) is the mediary for correct interpretation. They refer to it as 'The faithful and discreet slave'. Their society, is much like the papacy in that respect. In fact, to talk against the society is looked upon as apostacy in alot of their quarters.

As someone who had immediate family members baptised into this cult, and still have extended family members in it I have quite a bit of knowledge about them. Feel free to ask any questions you may have, and thank God she left this manipulative cult.
