TV not displaying digital channels

I think I already have an idea what the problem is but would like some advice before I waste hours trying other things...........

I put up a new aerial today (high gain UHF) and retuned the tv - Samsung series 6 1080p model L46A656 bought in the north last year - and I picked up 16 channels on the digital tv settings on the tv which were a mixture of radio and tv stations. I got the epg and the sound working fine and the tv stated that I had 95% quality on the incoming signal. However no matter what I tried, I couldn't get a picture. The tv screen stated "HD is not supported" but as the tv is a full HD set, this didn't make sense. Then I thought that perhaps the problem was perhaps down to the fact that my tv which is only 14 months old might not be MPEG4 ready (I've checked online and I can't get a definitive answer) and so my problem is that I might need a decoder box. Is this correct or is there something else I can try?

    Thanks

Samsung LE46A656 is MPEG-2 only, sold in France as a TNT-SD (mpeg-2) TV.
