Office 2003 activation

    I'll be brief.

How exactly does it decide that a copy of Office is running on a computer? I had installed it on 3 machines when I bought it, but it has since been uninstalled from 2 by way of a reformat (I never bothered to reinstall). I installed it on my current laptop... running Windows 7... and it activated fine. That would've been a 4th activation

Do activations expire after a certain amount of time with MS not detecting the machine online/searching for updates/however?

Or could it be the fact that one of those installations was on this machine, but under Linux/Wine (I did it to see if it would work)?

It's not cracked or anything. I used the cd-key from the box.

As far as I know, it's done by sending 'hidden' info over the Internet. So, I guess, if those computers don't have the Internet then you're fine... ..?

I don't know for certain about Office but for Windows the activation expires after 120 days.
